Catching Him Up
Who: Clint and Maria
Where: Walking around!
When: Tuesday, December 23rd
What: Maria showing Clint the ropes
Rating: Low
Status: Log, Complete
Maria had to admit that she was glad that someone sane from her world had shown up here that she could work with. No, she did not consider Stark to be anything resembling sane. Plus, Loki was here, and while she would be perfectly happy to lock him up in some nasty cell, she wasn't allowed to. After having Barton meet her, she offered to give him a tour of the place. "Where would you like to see first?"
He joined his hands behind his back as they walked along, dressed casually in jeans and a white polo shirt (which he admittedly was still getting used to wearing as he preferred his 'work outfit' more than anything). "Well, I've seen most of the common areas. How about where you spend most of your time?"
"Honestly, if I'm not in the office, I'm patrolling one of the areas," she explained to him. "This place has so much area to cover. Thankfully, I'm not the only one working here, but it's still plenty to keep a person busy."
"And do you enjoy it, or do you miss the action back home? Back before when SHIELD was still SHIELD, I mean." He kept forgetting that it didn't exist anymore, kept thinking of her as his boss, as 'deputy director' rather than 'Maria Hill'. It was hard to shake old habits.
"I miss home back when home was sane," Maria explained. "Since I can't get that anymore, I think I'll take here for now. "What do you think of the place so far?"
He nodded, understanding that. "It's big," he replied, giving her a brief smile and rubbing the back of his neck. "I like it. So far."
She laughed when he pointed out the size. "That might be the understatement of the century," she joked.
He glanced at her. It was nice to have someone from home here as well. It made the transition easier. "The people are interesting. I never thought that I'd meet a talking raccoon."
She bet that he thought he'd never meet aliens, either, but she didn't say that aloud. "It's definitely a crazy situation that we ended up in," she said. "Worse things out there than a talking raccoon, though."
Well now, that sobered him up. "Really? Like what?" It seemed like there was always some sort of conflict in the universe, but that didn't surprise him.
"Sometimes things follow people when they appear here," she explained. "At least one time we got zombies that came behind a person. Like something straight out of the movies."
"You're kidding," Clint replied with raised eyebrows. That was both amusing and kind of scray, although you wouldn't know it by his 'resting face'.
"No lie," she said with a shake of her head. "There are periods of quiet here, but this place can be madness sometimes."
"Hmm," he replied, going silent for a moment as they walked along. "Doesn't sound all too different from home." Although before Mexico, things didn't happen quite as frequently as they did now.
"Well, at least here we know to expect crazy. I don't think any of us were expecting the past couple of years to happen at home," Maria pointed out. Sure, deep in the recesses of SHIELD/HYDRA, things had been hidden, but that had been kept from all of them. They had all mostly just thought of themselves as a spy agency, after all.
Clint grunted in agreement. "Well, I for one, am going to try to take each day as it comes." Not much else he could do, really. "But, it is nice to see a familiar face."
"It really is nice to see a familiar face," Maria agreed with a smile. She had to admit that she was relieved that he had shown up.
Clint would have liked that their version of Natasha was with them as well, given that they had such a strong bond, but like the song went 'You can't always get what you want'. "Stark hasn't caused any shenanigans while he's been here, has he?" He was the type to do that, after all.
She shook her head. "Thank god, he's been on a streak of good behavior. I dread the day that something sets him off and he goes on a bender, though."
Clint quietly agreed there. "Hopefully Ms. Potts will help to curb any of those desires." She did seem to have a good influence on him, at least. "Is there anyone here I should be... leery of?"
She frowned when he said that. "I don't know if anyone has told you yet, but Loki is here as well. He's kept a low profile and no one is willing to let us just shoot him out into space or anything, but you should be aware that he's here all the same."
Clint frowned. "Shouldn't his past history dictate that he's behind iron bars?" He knew that the people in this space and time couldn't possibly be aware of Loki's doings in another universe, but if other people had come through from the same universe said that he was a horrible person, then why was he still walking around without chains?
"The people in charge of this place are all former convicts, from what I can tell. One of them even seems to have worked as a mercenary or something," Maria explained. "I think they are waiting to see if he does anything. I don't think we should give him a chance to screw up, but I'm not the one in charge. I just work here." Story of her damn life sometimes.
Clint reeled back, but... accepted what Maria said. Sometimes orders from high up came before personal prejudices, sad to say. "Soon as he does something, they have to realize that we won't take it lying down," he pointed out.
"Trust me, I put that message out there to them," Maria said with a nod. Personally, she was waiting for the bastard to fuck up so they could put him into a canon and fire him into the sun. She had lost some friends when the SHIELD headquarters had collapsed, not to mention what Loki did to Coulson.
"Well, I appreciate that," he replied. It was nice to have someone from their universe with a level head speaking for them. "You ever need anything, just let me know."
