Eventually, she ventured out of Genovia and went to Freedomtown. She hadn't been to that particular city much since arriving on Galador and Riley whisked her away to Genovia. Right now, Maya just wanted to get away to find something new. Or... to maybe figure out why her parents had been so weird lately.
Donovan was on a deadline. When it was just him on Galador, it wasn't that big of a deal that he didn't want to tell his parents right away who he was. But now Skyler was there with him. She was fifteen. There was no reason for Shawn and Katy to be taking care of her while Maya and Josh were there to handle their own children. It was just a matter of how to tell Maya. Josh would be the easy one.
He was walking to the coffee shop when he sat a blonde girl trip on her way in. He blinked as he rushed over to her and helped her up, not thinking as he spoke. "You okay, mom?" Thankfully, she was obviously a little drunk, so maybe she wouldn't notice.
Once Maya was on her feet, she shoved Donovan away. "... the f--" she looked him in the eyes. "What did you just call me?" She took a step back, shaking her head.
Donovan held his hands up in surrender, speaking calmly. "I'm sorry. I didn't want to..." But he was cut off by his mother bringing her hand up.
"I thought that the smarties fixed the whole thing where kids were coming back in time, but..." she rubbed her temple. "Shit kid, you look just like your dad and uncles. You're telling me that we were careful enough? That I wasn't on some space birth control or something?"
Donovan laughed, shaking his head. "I wasn't born here. I was born in Manhattan."
"Okay, okay..." Maya nodded. "They tell us all about this timeline stuff. I'd probably have a harder time believing it if I didn't come from a few years into the future, as well. I'm fairly sure that I don't even from the same year that your dad and Riley."
Donovan nodded as he lead his mother over to a table. "You're right about that. I didn't notice it at first, but at least it isn't a significant difference. I'm going to get you a coffee. I'll be right back."
Maya opened her mouth to say something but stopped herself. If this boy was really her son, he'd have to know how she takes her coffee. Especially seeing as how she needed to work the alcohol out of her system. When he returned with their drinks, she looked across the table as he sat down. "So is it just you? I didn't end up going Duggar or something, did I?"
Donovan quickly shook his head. "There's only one more. I've got a younger sister. Her name is Skyler." He paused, but quickly continued, "and before we continue... she's here. She's staying with Grandma and Grandpa, but..."
Maya groaned, "fuck me," she mumbled. "I wanna say 'no'. I do. But I get it. There is no reason I should be dumping my kids off on my parents when I am perfectly capable of taking care of them myself. Not that it seems that you need me."
"Nope," Donovan exhaled sharply. "I've already made a bit of a life for myself here. I'm actually doing something that I've avoided telling Grandma and Grandpa about. Being a jock, I wasn't the best in school, so when I messed up my knee last year I was a little limited on what I would be able to do."
"Dude..." Maya laughed before taking a sip of her coffee. "Perfect, by the way. So I just recently paid for an EMC Pictures subscription..."
Donovan's face turned bright red as he nodded. "You're going to want to avoid some of the titles."
"Oh shit!" Maya began laughing hysterically. "I just met my son, and I find out that he does porn," she shook her head before busting out laughing again. "Don't get me wrong. I'm cool with it. This is just..."
"Yeah, not typical, but since when did we do anything in a normal manner?" Donovan shrugged, smirking.
"You know that Riley will never understand," Maya sighed.
"I love my cousin, I do," Donovan laughed. "But she has always lived in her own world. From what I can tell, not even Uncle Cory was as naive as her."
"No," Maya shook her head with a chuckle, taking another drink of her coffee. "No, Riley is in a class all her own. So hey... have you talked to your Aunt at all yet?"
Donovan shook his head. "It seems Dani and Livvie don't recognize me. I mean... with our actual age difference, they were babysitting me. Now I'm older than them here."
Maya took a deep breath, finishing her coffee. "Looks like I'm going to have to have a chat with my parents."
