Qui-Gon knew that he was dying. It was a difficult detail to miss. So it did not seem strange to him when the world turned in upon itself in a blinding flash of light. The mind played tricks when under strain, and Qui-Gon was exhausted. He had been before the fatal blow of the Sith lightsabre, before Obi-Wan's grief and denial had swept across their bond. The latter had hurt more than the wound itself. Qui-Gon had not intended to leave Obi-Wan behind, to end the long years as Master and Padawan this way. He'd been too hard on Obi-Wan of late, he lamented. And now he would leave him in a universe that had become all too dangerous.
Then the bond was severed. Qui-Gon gasped on breath he didn't have to spare. He heard someone, somewhere nearby, but the darkness moved inexorably toward him. His confusion and fear for his Padawan lasted only a moment before consciousness fled.
Qui-Gon had no idea how much time might have passed when he came around again. He was stiff, tired, in pain, and not altogether sure what had happened. At least he was lying down, he reflected, and at least there was a mattress beneath him to cushion the ache that reached down into his bones.
