Who: Kat & Juliet
When: Backdated to July 21st
Where: The End Zone (Doom Republic)
What: An unplanned lunch meeting
Rating: PG
Status: Closed & complete
Kat had decided to go shopping for supplies, which typically took her all over the place. She'd gone to Commerceport for some parts toward the mixing board she'd been building for her songs, but then took the tram to Doom Republic, knowing that the best supplies for her ship/weapon projects would be there and New Wakanda.
Her shopping done now, she'd decided to pop into the End Zone's DR location, feeling in the mood for some wings and nachos. She looked every bit the tomboy she was today, wearing denim coveralls over a Ghost tee, her hair tied back in a bun, and clunky black work boots on her feet.
Juliet was too busy to have lunch, she was always too busy. Her practice was booming. After all, babies didn't wait for no one. James noticed she was losing weight, concerned she made her promise to eat lunch and take some time doing it, not eating out of a vending machine on her way to her next patient.
She'd made a promise, she intended on keeping it. Taking down her hair from it's usual work ponytail, she took off her lab coat, smoothed her skirt, changing shoes to her heels. For some reason, she'd decided to go to the End Zone for lunch. She'd decided to try it as Ellie recommended it.Walking in, it took a minute for her eyes to focus in the dark. It was quite a lovely day outside making her want to leave early. When her eyes focused she saw Kat sitting at a table across the way. Juliet waved to Kat, walked over to where she was sitting. "Mind if I join you?" she asked smiling, hoping the girl would agree. Juliet really liked her.
"Oh! Of course!" Kat said with a grin when she processed who was talking to her. She slid the other chair out, waving to her. "How are you, ma'am?"
"Better now that I see you, I was dreading sitting in here alone; I was going to get a togo box. Seeing you makes me want to stay and relax." Juliet said, smoothing her skirt as she sat down. "I'll make a deal with you, I get to call you Kat, while you call me Juliet? How does that sound," she asked, a smile kissing her lips.
Kat laughed, making a mental note to stop saying "ma'am" when talking to her. "I'm sorry, M-... Juliet. I just get used to calling people sir and ma'am to show respect. And It's just so important to me that I make a good impression on Ellie's family, you know?"
Juliet's smile grew brighter. "It's a difficult habit to stop," she said matter-of-factory. "It's perfectly fine calling me ma'am. Just makes me feel old." she laugher, taking her right hand she patted Kat's arm, "to be perfectly honest, I was very nervous about meeting Ellie's girl. I, and I'd like to think James, too. were nervous about meeting you." The blonde doctor laughed. "It is so important to us that we get along. Going with the honesty, you were not what I expected, you are so much more."
"Really?" Kat asked, scrunching her face up cutely. "Ellie tells me similar things. I guess I just have a hard time seeing it myself." She smiled then, honestly just relieved that her meeting with "the parents" had gone so well. "You guys were great by the way. I thought meeting you was gonna be soooo awkward, but it wasn't at all!"
"That's the best compliment you could give," she said, now reaching out to give Kat's hand a squeeze. "I felt the same way about you. I changed my clothes five times, I was so nervous. It was so important that we make a good impression," she said, sighing a happy sigh."It's hard seeing good things in oneself, " she said, her doctor voice talking over. "If only you could see yourself through our eyes. It would make a world of difference," Juliet took her hand away grabbing a menu off the table with it.
"I do have to give you the usual statement about dating my daughter," she said with a laugh, her professionalism woven through her words. "I love Ellie, I never thought I'd have a child much less one as amazing as Ellie. I know that things happen between couples, but if you were to ever carelessly hurt her, you have to deal with me." Her voice softened. "Ellie would also have to deal with me if she carelessly hurt you."
"I understand completely." Kat told her, just looking like the most harmless little thing in the world (which made it even more comical to realize how dangerous she could be). "Words don't always mean a lot, especially when you don't know the person well yet. But for what it's worth... I know we're young, but I'm so in love with Ellie I can't even explain it. As far as I'm concerned, I'm hers until she decides she doesn't want me anymore."
"Another thing we have in common. I could say those words sum up how I feel for James," she skimmed the menu then stopped turning her head to look at Kat. "Don't let being young hinder you at any age. You feel the way you feel, after all the heart wants what the heart wants," for a moment she focused on the menus, she looked up at Kat, "not to be rude but these smells are making me hungry. What do you recommend,? she asked as she placed the menu down on the table, straightening her silverware and napkin.
"I'm guessing the food's made the same way it is in Freedomtown...." Kat mused, looking over the menu herself. "I love the honey garlic wings and the nachos. Not exactly healthy, but I stopped in just for those."
"Then I will go with your recommendations, they must be good if you stopped in just to have them. This is my first time, I'm a novice. If it had been James she was speaking with she would have said something all together different. She was, after all considered the adult. Being a doctor, it was sometimes difficult for her to relax and change from Dr. Burke to Juliet. She found that easy with Kat, even though when it came to Ellie, she could change to Dr. Burke in a heartbeat. The beautiful doctor began, " I have a question for you to consider."
"Ok..." Kat replied, a curious look coming over her features. "Is this about something you need me to build? Cos if so, whatever it is I'll do no questions asked."
"You are a sweet girl, I will remember that bit of information." Juliet's laugh, happy and relaxed held a hint of seriousness. "Maybe we could pay you for making machines for DRH? After you left dinner Ellie, told us how talented you are, it's just a thought it might not be feasible for you," she was interrupted by the waitress.
Both women ordered, Juliet ordering for Kat, silently instructing her to put both orders on her ticket. "Anyway, the family is going on a vacation to Hawaii. We'd like you to consider going with us?" Juliet smiled at the waitress who brought their water. Picking up the glass, she said thank you to the server, then took a drink.
Kat thought about it. On one hand, could it be too early for Ellie to have her girlfriend going on vacation with the family? But on the other hand... Ellie in a bikini. "I'd love to!" Kat said with a big grin, fidgeting a bit with the bracelet she wore. She was always on the move, always touching or fidgeting with something.
Juliet noticed Kat was always moving. It could be the slightest movement but nonetheless it was. Her physicians brain instantly kicked into gear. She thought, 'High functioning ADHD person.' Juliet shook her head, long blonde tresses swaying back and forth. It was rude to label her, putting her in a box. Shaking her head killed the thought in her cerebrum. It could be something else. Kat was a ball of energy, there were many possible answers as to why.
"I'm so happy, you are. Ellie will be surprised that you're coming," she said as delicious fragrences tickled her nose. "Thank goodness that's ours. Fast service, I'm impressed."
"Yeah, it's pretty surprising. I always thought the other one was so fast just because Rachelle throws things at them when it's not." Kat mused, smirking a little. "Usually things on fire." She re-focused on what they'd been talking about. "Just the fact that you invited me made my entire day." Kat said, before adding, "Obviously, I need to check with my mom and dad. After everything that happened, especially with my workshop getting blown up, they started setting more "typical" teenager rules for me."
"You blew up your workshop? Were you playing with fire or were you creating an experiment? I'd love to hear about it if it is," the excitement in her voice causing her tone to go a little higher. She did that when she was really excited.
"Ohhhh ho ho ho." Kat chuckled, shaking her head. "Nothing like that, I'm afraid." She thought for a moment about how to phrase this. The way Penelope had talked, it sounded as though Juliet and Sawyer never even knew she and Ellie were dating. "Someone got mad at me, and used magic to blow up my workshop. Long story, but we talked it out afterward, saw each other's viewpoints, and we're.... actually kinda friends now."
"That's amazing that you could have that much negativity and now you've found common ground. That speaks volumes about your character. It seems the more I'm around you the happier I become. Don't ever forget that, and excuse me for saying it, but I think you need to know it." At the last minute she realized what she was saying might not be appropriate, causing her to blush. "How long have you two been together?" She asked as she tried a wing.
"Only about two weeks." Kat told her, smiling at the very thought of them being together. "Honestly, we'd only become official like.... a day or so before you figured it out yourself."
"It was luck, being at the right place at the right time. It didn't hurt that she was glowing. I've heard her talk about her friends. She has that same glow when she talks about you," Juliet was beaming herself talking about her daughter."I knew it was someone, you were just the logical choice." It was luck. Ellie kept a lot of things close to her chest. Juliet was even surprised she figured it out. She was proud of her daughter's tastes. Kat's admiration for Ellie was not lost on Juliet.
"If we're being honest? I still can't believe she wanted to be with me. I'm so used to being the weird kid everyone made fun of..." Kat started, before steering away from those thoughts quickly. "Ellie's so beautiful, you know? Inside and out. And I guess I'm just shocked that of all the people she could have, she picked me."
"The weird kids are the successful, gifted ones. Ones that sometimes become doctors, too. I was bullied. Being smart isn't the popular thing," Juliet shared softly."Yes she is beautiful. She did all of that herself. But you too are lovely inside and out, at least the part I know. Don't ever doubt that fact. See yourself through Ellie's eyes. You can't truly love another until you love yourself. That advice is from Ellie's grandmother Burke."
Kat nodded, listening to the woman. She realized that she needed someone like this in her life. Six was a GREAT mom, and Kat loved everything about her... but through no fault of her own (Kat WAS kinda thrown at her and Rocket) she wasn't always the most naturally maternal person around. Combine that with how gruff and grumpy Rocket tended to be... she loved her parents and wouldn't trade them for the world, but they were bred to fight. To survive. It was nice having someone to talk to that was more nurturing. "I.... kinda already feel like part of the family. And I can't even tell you how much I love it."
"I'd be unhappy if you didn't. My mother had a saying, 'if you don't feel at home, that's where you ought to be. It came from her mother. " Juliet couldn't help but beam. She was a nurturer. She wanted more children, but didn't know if James wanted more. Juliet was a natural mother, even when the doctor side took over.
"You are born or adopted into a family, but the others you choose on your own. Ellie chose you, which means we choose you too. What I find interesting is, it feels so right. Does that make any sense?" Juliet asked Kat
"It makes total sense." Kat told her, as really she felt the exact same way. "Would it be weird if I said I really want you and Sawyer to meet my mom and dad? I just feel like it needs to happen."
"No it wouldn't be weird at all, particularly if you are coming with us to Hawaii. On the other hand, I feel it's my responsibility to meet them. The parents are always a part of the equation, that's just how it is. "
"My mom can seem very... cold to some people. especially when it involves me. But she's VERY kind. She's just very protective of me." Kat explained, the sweetness in her voice making it clear that she adored both of her parents. "And Daddy.... well, I'd say it's just because of me, but he's a grumpy little flartnard most of the time no matter what. He's sweet once you get to know him though."
"I'd love to meet them. I'm sure some of both of them has rubbed off on you, If they are your parents the saying goes, 'they are good people.'" Juliet said, quoting her grandmother.
"For all I know, you might have met one or both already. They're both members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Six and Rocket." Kat said, rather proudly.
"Their reputations precede them. I met Rocket when I first arrived, but have not had a situation to arise since then. I doubt he remembers me, the exchange was so brief," she shared with Katariina. "I'm excited to meet them both," she said as she picked at her nachos.
"Wait till you meet my mom. She's SO cool. And the prettiest woman I've ever seen." Kat beamed, clearly looking up to Six in a big way. "Between the two of them, it's no wonder I grew up so good at building and using weapons."
"It's obvious you adore your parents, that's good for me to see as Ellie's mom. I'm guessing they don't know about the two of you?" Juliet took a drink of water, looked at her watch, and decided for once she would take her time. She was enjoying getting to know the love of her daughter's life
"No, they do." Kat laughed, running a hand through her long hair. "Daddy already talked to Ellie on the network. Same as you said to me: the whole "don't hurt my kid and we'll be cool" talk. " She decided not to talk about the other thing Rocket had said to her, because frankly, Ellie's mom did NOT need to know about she and Ellie's sex life.
Juliet smiled. She wished Ellie had come to her. But then Ellie did things in her own time, she just started blinking and pretending something was in her eye. One thing Juliet gave Ellie was space. She'd been so busy delivering babies, she'd neglected her family. Hence the trip to Hawaii. Juliet made a mental note to be more present for her family.
"It's good that you can tell your parents, that's important. I cried when Ellie called me mom. I know there are things she'll tell you that she won't tell me for whatever reason. Keep her heart," Juliet couldn't help but say.
"That really is a big thing for her." Kat agreed. "The fact that she loves and trusts you guys... that's big. If I have my way, nothing is ever gonna hurt that girl again."
"I've got your back on that one. I feel pretty safe in saying James feels the same way. As long as she is communicating with one of us, that's what counts. Maybe she'll bond with your family. A person can't have enough caring people in their lives," Juliet added as she finished her water, putting her glass on the end of the table so someone on the staff would see the empty glass.
Kat glanced at her watch, eyes widening when she realized how much time had passed. Clearly, time did indeed fly when you're having fun. "Oh crap. Ma-.. Juliet? I hate to bolt like this, but I gotta get heading back. I told Brandie I'd have the mixing board put together before she comes over later tonight, and there's a good bit of work to do on it."
"Don't think another thought about it, I did have fun talking with you," she said as she got her purse. "This is on me. If I need to talk to your parents about Hawaii, just let me know. Thank you for a pleasant afternoon."
"You too!" Kat said, hopping up from the table and grabbing the big bag of supplies she had with her. "More than likely, either Mom or Daddy will call you to talk about everything."
"I'll be waiting," Juliet said. She was about to say something else but thought better of it.
