Re: The Unicorn
This had been about proving herself. That was The Unicorn's sole reason for even entering this competition. To prove to herself and to people that doubted her that she had real talent, and that she could be a great entertainer.
She'd meticulously planned the order of her songs. To first show she was capable of taking even a classic pop number and making it sound good. Then she moved on to a classic rock song, impressing everyone with her presentation of it. And then last time? She'd brought the metal, and handled Metallica like a seasoned pro.
Now that she was in the finals? She knew she needed something that represented the sound she wanted to go for, while at the same time being fun for the judges and the audience to lose themselves in.
The performance began with smoke billowing out amid red and blue lighting, only the shadow of The Unicorn visible through it all, before her voice called out.
"ALLLLLLL ABOOOOOOOOOOOARD!!!!!"
The bassline kicked in then, thumping behind her. Finally, a familiar guitar riff blared out, crisp and clear, before she began to sing, putting everything she had left into this.
"Crazy, but that's how it goes Millions of people living as foes Maybe it's not too late To learn how to love and forget how to hate Mental wounds not healing Life's a bitter shame"
"I'm going off the rails on a crazy train I'm going off the rails on a crazy train"
She was in the zone now, her smile somehow evident even behind the heavy mask she wore. Her body language was that of a true rock star, knowing just when to pose, just when to engage the audience.
"I've listened to preachers, I've listened to fools I've watched all the dropouts who make their own rules One person conditioned to rule and control The media sells it and you live the role Mental wounds still screaming Driving me insane"
She'd been through this before: giving her all to something, only to be shot down and criticized. But that was then. This time, she wouldn't let anyone get into her head, or make her doubt herself. Win or lose, she was going out with zero regrets, and full confidence.
"I'm going off the rails on a crazy train I'm going off the rails on a crazy train"
"I know that things are going wrong for me You gotta listen to my words"
She was happy. VERY happy. It had been the best time of her life recently. But deep inside, she still had a little ball of anger inside her, over her past failings. It was that anger that she tapped into here, both to use it as fuel, and to exorcise it from her once and for all.
"Heirs of a cold war, that's what we've become Inheriting troubles, I'm mentally numb Crazy, I just cannot bear I'm living with something that just isn't fair Mental wounds stop healing Who and what's to blame I'm going off the rails on a crazy train I'm going off the rails on a crazy train"
She finished the song, throwing the metal horns in the air as she soaked in the crowd's cheers, finally firm in the knowledge that whether she won or lost, she'd do so with the knowledge that she did it on her own terms and nobody else's.
