Re: The Unicorn
As we got closer and closer to the end, the performers were letting go more, focusing more on having fun and trying to show what they could do. After a poppy start with 'Flashdance', The Unicorn had gone 80's-rock by singing 'Holy Diver'... and for the third performance? It was time to bring out the big guns.
As the familiar opening chords to 'Enter Sandman' began to play, The Unicorn strutted out, waving to everyone before kicking the mic stand into a standing position as the beat hit, grabbing it and stomping across the stage.
"Say your prayers, little one Don't forget my son to include everyone I tuck you in, warm within, keep you free from sin Till the sandman he comes"
"Sleep with one eye open Gripping your pillow tight"
Throwing a fist in the air as the chorus approached, The Unicorn was seeming to find her perfect tone: between last time and this? She was finding a style that wasn't entirely clean vocals OR screaming... but a damn good combination that gave her a slightly raspy, almost Joan Jett type of delivery.
"Exit light Enter night Take my hand We're off to never-never land"
She'd gone into full rock star mode now, forgoing any type of cute dancing or waving, instead sprinting around the stage, glad-handing with audience members before propping one foot up on the nearest amplifier and beginning the next verse.
"Something's wrong, shut the light, heavy thoughts tonight And they aren't Snow White Dreams of war, dreams of liars, dreams of dragon's fire And of things that will bite, yeah"
"Sleep with one eye open Gripping your pillow tight"
There was a chip on her shoulder here, and she was clearly trying to prove a point to someone. And that determination brought a ferocity to the performance that she had never shown until today.
"Exit light Enter night Take my hand We're off to never-never land"
"Now I lay me down to sleep Pray the lord my soul to keep If I die before I wake Pray the lord my soul to take"
As the song approached it's finale, The Unicorn pulled together all her remaining energy, stomping over to where the judges sat, and rocking out only a few feet away from them.
"Hush, little baby, don't say a word And never mind that noise you heard It's just the beasts under your bed In your closet, in your head"
"Exit light Enter night Grain of sand"
"Exit light Enter night Take my hand We're off to never-never land"
