The Butterfly
As the package ended and the lights came up, Butterfly was standing up on a platform by herself. Her black-gloved hands are up holding the mic stand and she seemed to be taking just a fraction of a moment to compose herself before she began to sing.
I might never be a knight in shining armor I might never be the one to take home to mother And I might never be the one who brings you flowers But I can be the one, be the one tonight
She took a breath between words then continued and as she did Barron and Sally entered the stage on both sides of her. They were both dressed in black bodysuits with butterfly masks covering their faces. Their steps towards each other in front of her were slow and deliberate like they had eyes only each other.
When I first saw you From across the room I could tell that you were curious (oh, yeah) Well I hope you're sure What you're looking for 'Cause I'm not good at making promises
As Butterly got to the chorus, the two dancers met in the middle and began to do some beautiful lyrical partner work together. For now, Butterfly stays at the mic and kept her hands on it, really getting into the song like it meant something to her. And it did but only for reasons she knew of.
But if you like causing trouble up in hotel rooms And if you like having secret little rendezvous If you like to do the things you know that we shouldn't do Baby, I'm perfect Baby, I'm perfect for you And if you like midnight driving with the windows down And if you like going places we can't even pronounce If you like to do whatever you've been dreaming about Baby, you're perfect Baby, you're perfect So let's start right now
Pulling the mic off of the stand, Butterfly walked off of the stand as she sang and began crossing down center stage. The dancers moved around her like leaves in wind, neither of them touching her or her wings. It was like she commanded everyone to pay attention to her with her stage presence as she walked forward.
I might never be the hands you put your heart in Or the arms that hold you any time you want them But that don't mean that we can't live here in the moment 'Cause I can be the one you love from time to time When I first saw you From across the room I could tell that you were curious (oh, yeah) Well I hope you're sure What you're looking for 'Cause I'm not good at making promises
As she sang the chorus again, she made her way to the end of the stage and began to interact with the audience's outstretched hands. She started at the left, making her way to the center than the right. She tried to get as many hands as she could while not losing her focus on what she was singing.
But if you like causing trouble up in hotel rooms And if you like having secret little rendezvous If you like to do the things you know that we shouldn't do Baby, I'm perfect Baby, I'm perfect for you And if you like midnight driving with the windows down And if you like going places we can't even pronounce If you like to do whatever you've been dreaming about Baby, you're perfect Baby, you're perfect So let's start right now
When the song slowed down, she stood up and made her way back towards the center of the stage. For the moment, her back was turned towards the judges and audience but it wouldn't be for long. It was at this point the dancers exited stage left so it was just Butterfly on the stage again.
And if you like cameras flashing every time we go out (Oh, yeah) And if you're looking for someone to write your breakup songs about Baby, I'm perfect Baby, we're perfect
As the music kicked back in, Butterfly turned back around and began to sing the chorus again with all she had as the audience cheered. She ended the song with a hand on her hip, her other hand blowing a kiss to someone out there who would remain a mystery to everyone but her.
