Some Sound Advice
Who: Jean and Lauren
Where: The Hospital
When: Monday, July 14th
What: Jean asking for work
Rating: Low
Status: Log, Closed, Complete
While she'd been looking for ways to help out, Jean had to admit: despite her immense telepathic and telekinetic powers, there was only so much a sixteen year old girl with her skill-set and abilities could really do. So, after conferring with Cosmo (and how weird was THAT?) and Star-Lord, she decided that her abilities might be best served helping out at Freedomtown's hospital.
Walking into the lobby dressed in a blue skirt and white t-shirt, the teen tentatively walked up to the front desk and looked around to see if anyone was nearby that could give her any type of information. "Hello? Is there any around?"
Lauren had asked for an assignment/job at the hospital within hours of her arrival at Freedomtown. That wasn't to say that she wasn't freaked out about being on a spaceship in a different universe (far, far away from Bo and everything that she knew), but her way of dealing with most things was to bury herself in work - in science. At least science made sense, no matter what universe she was in.
Anyway. She'd just been making her usual rounds when she overheard Jean and, curiosity piqued, she slid her hands into the pockets of her white lab coat and made her way over to the younger woman. "...Can I help you?"
"Oh! You're Lauren, right? We briefly met on the network. I'm Jean." The redheaded teen said as she straightened her posture and tried to look more, well... mature. "I was hoping maybe I could help out around here." At least this woman had seemed friendly enough over the net... maybe she'd be able to make this less awkward for the girl.
Unless you rubbed her the wrong way Lauren was generally a nice person and easy to get to know, even if her sense of humor could be a little off sometimes. She blinked at Jean, then squeezed her eyes shut and actually face-palmed, comically enough. "Jean! Right, right. It's a pleasure to meet you in the flesh. And it's nice to see it's all intact, what with the zombies and everything." She made another face, then decided to continue past that hurdle lest she embarrass herself further. She really needed to socialize more. "Well, is there anything in particular that you feel that you could handle?"
Jean actually giggle-snorted when Lauren made the offhanded zombie remark, and then winced a little when she asked what she could handle. "Well, I'm not a trained nurse or anything, but I know basic first-aid and I'm both a telepath and a telekinetic, if that could be of any help..."
"Well, that's a good start. And it's not like we can't teach you a few other things along the way." Lauren stopped abruptly when she realized something. "You're kind of... young. Not that I'd hold that against you, but isn't there, shouldn't there, be a school on board this ship?"
"I.... don't *think* there's really enough teenagers here to warrant an entire school, but... it could be an option if we get more. For now, my professor is actually here with me, and I know she'd be willing to set up tutoring for any kids that need it..." Jean said after thinking about it for a few moments. Any kids that popped up here really DID need a way to continue their education...
"Maybe that's something we can discuss with your professor and the... people in charge. But for now, yes. I'd appreciate the help." She started to lead Jean down the hall so they could talk more privately in her office. "So, you said you were a telepath and telekinetic. That could be very useful here. May I ask how... strong those abilities are?" She wanted to ask how unstable they were, but didn't think that would be very tactful.
Jean raised an eyebrow, concentrating for a moment before asking in a soft tone: "Who's Bo, ma'am? She's kind of all over your thoughts right now." Wow... now there's an interesting little display of Jean's capabilities, at least with telepathy. "Sorry... sometimes when someone has REALLY strong thoughts, I can read them without even trying. It's something I'm trying to get under control."
Lauren flinched at the mention of Bo's name. Well, that answered the question as to how unstable Jean's powers may be. Or, the question of how strong they could be. Lauren reached up to grasp the necklace that she'd worn for almost a decade in service to The Ash, only to remember that she'd discarded it all those months ago. "That's really quite impressive. Do they have a name for what you are where you're from?"
"Well... those of us who are born with special abilities are called mutants. I specifically am both a telepath and a telekinetic. Meaning that along with being able to read minds, I can communicate mentally as well as move objects with my mind." The redhead blushed lightly, realizing how raw and new this last part made her sound. "Apparently.... I can do a lot more than that too. But I'm still discovering various aspects of my abilities."
"Mutant," Lauren nodded. It made sense from a scientific standpoint, even though the word wasn't exactly... friendly on the ears. "That sounds... overwhelming," she added with a small smile, opening the door to her office and gesturing for Jean to enter first as she thought about her current predicament. She would always be a plain human surrounded extraordinary people, wouldn't she? Back home, at least there was Kenzi. Lauren deflated immediately at the thought. Kenzi was dead. "Did your abilities manifest with puberty?"
"That's how it is for most of us, yes. Mine began to hit much earlier, due to the sheer level of power." Jean thought of how to explain this part, as really, SHE didn't even know about it until after she came to this time. "The way it was explained to me is... there are a select few people born with such sheer, brute-force power, that they're far more powerful than most other mutants. The term they use is Omega-Level mutant. Apparently, I'm an Omega."
Well, that was overwhelming. Lauren wondered what that kind of power could be like in the wrong hands, what someone would be capable of with it. She then winced. "Sorry. I tend to go to worst case scenarios first." She figured Jean might have heard her, so there was no point trying to hide her thoughts just then. "Do you know of any other mutants on board?"
"Trust me, I'm the queen of worst-case scenarios. No offense taken." The teen giggled, rolling her eyes. "And yes... there are quite a few of us on board. My professor is one as well."
Lauren smiled. "Sorry to ask so many questions. Where I'm from... people weren't what they seemed, either." They weren't technically people, either, but semantics. "It was my job to study them and give them medical care, if they needed it." She was fortunate that her research wasn't used for ill deeds... most of the time. "Anyway, I'm more than happy to help you find a place here."
"I don't mind answering questions. Really." Jean assured her, giving a soft smile. "God, with everything going on here, EVERYONE'S gotta have questions. Me included. I mean, so many people here were in books or movies I loved as a kid.... its mind-boggling."
Lauren laughed. "I've been trying not to think about that. It's enough being on a spaceship away from everyone I care about, throw in fictional characters and it's a bit much," she replied, wrinkling her nose.
"It is, I admit... but OH MY GOD Sirius Black is here. If Harry Potter or Hermione Granger show up, I cannot guarantee I won't squeal and do a little dance." Jean admitted with a blush, raising an eyebrow with a little lopsided grin. "Ok, and between us, I wouldn't have expected Sirius to show up so young. Or cute."
Lauren laughed again. "Well, I guess that just goes to show that anything's possible." What a frightening thought, come to think of it.
Jean blinked then, clearly having picked up something else. This "Bo" she was picking up in her thoughts... hm. "Ma'am? I apologize for... accidentally picking this up but.... since I saw your feelings for this Bo person.... can I ask you something private that's been bothering me?"
"Of course," Lauren replied with a light frown. People didn't often ask for her advice unless it was something serious, or in regards to a medical condition. Plus, she was used to being a human in a Fae world. She'd been treated more like an indentured servant than anything (which admittedly she was). "What's on your mind?"
"So... I made a new friend here. Jill. She's a.... I can't believe I'm saying this.... a vampire." Jean began, taking a deep breath. "She hadn't fed in a while, and was basically starving. So I let her feed from me. Nothing major, just a little from the wrist." Awwwr, she was fidgeting now! "Now keep in mind, I like boys. I've never even had the slightest INKLING of attraction to a woman. But ever since she fed from me.... I can't stop THINKING about her. About wanting to kiss her, and..... other things I never thought I'd be wanting."
Wow, if that didn't suddenly make Lauren think very graphic things about Bo. She quickly shut that part of her mind off and focused on Jean. "Well, I suppose my first question would be 'As a vampire, does she also have the ability to enthrall people?' followed by 'Does her feeding on you feel like it could become addictive?'"
"As far as I know, she can't enthrall me. She's been very upfront and honest about everything else, good and bad, so I don't see why she'd hide that..." Jean mused, before taking a dreamy little sigh as she thought back to the bite. "And... yeah. She said when she feeds too frequently from a person, they become addicted and turn into almost a mindless follower or something, which is why as hungry as she's getting, she doesn't want to feed from me often."
Lauren sighed. She was going to have to learn whole new sets of rules in this place, she just knew it. "I'd recommend spending time with her without her feeding from you. That way you can't let the feeding cloud your judgement. If you find that the attraction is still there... well, you should know that there's nothing wrong with that. And if not, well, that's perfectly alright too."
"....thank you. Seriously, ma'am... I really needed to hear someone tell me that, I think." Jean said gratefully, as really, she did NOT feel comfortable talking to anyone from home about this. "So.... let's get going. You can show me around this place and teach me some basic stuff."
"You're always welcome to come and talk to me." Lauren was a doctor, so she knew how to keep things confidential, but... more than that, she was lonely, so it would be nice to have someone to talk to. Even someone as young as Jean. "But yes, you're absolutely right. Let's get going."
