Kyle had been told about his relationship with Sarah Connor by his older brother. It was still a few years away before that would have happened for him. Right now he was just a sixteen year old with a son that was the same age as him and now a woman that had a some kind of relationship with. He didn't know entirely of what the relationship was. Just that it led to them having a son. It wasn't exactly what most people experienced. So there was no one to really talk to about it. Which is why he didn't tell his brother or Kyle that he was going to meet up with her. One of his favorite places on Galador was the parks. It seemed like the perfect place. It was a neutral area that they could get a chance to talk. He had arrived a little bit earlier than the time they were going to meet. He picked up a coffee on the way so he could just relax a little bit. He couldn't believe how much he liked coffee. He sat on a bench in the middle of the snow covered park. Sipping on the coffee as he looked out into the distance.
Sarah Connor had been through a lot. One thing for sure she knew about herself was that she was resilient. But, this was something she wasn’t expecting to ever come across. That was her long dead lover, but in the form of a teenaged boy. She stood in the shadows smoking a cigarette, and watching him for some time. She was unable to believe what she was seeing. She finished her cigarette and decided to slowly approach him. She was wearing her usual t-shirt, blue jeans and combat boots. Her graying hair was cut short and hung around her eyes. She stood there and stared at him. “Are you Kyle?” She asked. Her voice didn’t waver, but her heart pounded nervously.
Kyle didn't feel entirely comfortable in the park. It was nice there and he loved being able to be out in the open. Only he didn't like being unarmed yet. It didn't feel entirely safe to be sitting there. Still he sipped on his coffee as he waited. He noticed the woman but didn't know if it was really her or not. So he didn't get up or move as she walked up. "Yeah, that's me," he said confirming that this kid was the man that would eventually father John Connor. He knew, really knew that he wasn't the Kyle that anyone expected. He wasn't even an adult yet. "Hi."
Sarah offered a kind smile. “Hello, Kyle. I’m Sarah Connor, John’s mother.” She introduced herself and sat next to him on the bench. There was an awkward silence for a few moments. “I thought that meeting you would get some of this awkwardness out of the way.” She chuckled softly. “Apparently not. I will tell you how we met. Future you traveled back in time to save me from a Terminator programmed to kill me.” She sighed. “We only had one night together but it was one of the best I have ever had and I don’t regret anything. Thank you for giving me John.”
"Pretty sure there's no way for it not to be awkward," Kyle laughed as he lightly shook his head. They were pulled from two very different times. Not to guess her age but he felt that he was young enough to be her grandson. That was sure to be awkward. "Yeah, Derek told me a little about it. When he explained John." It was probably better to hear it from someone he knew first. He looked over to her as she thanked him for John. He felt like he should be thanking her. John was the reason he was alive now. "He's a good guy. It looks like in any time," he said absently. "I met him in the future and met him when I got here." He had already found out that he died from his brother. "Did you see me die?"
Sarah studied Kyle. He was the ghost from her past, literally here like alive. She sighed. “Everyone is talking about Derek, and you never told me anything about having a brother. But then again we didn’t talk about him either.” She sighed and tears welled up in her eyes as he asked the question. “Yeah. You died protecting me from a Cyberdyne Systems Model 101. You died fighting like a hero, and you completed your mission, soldier.” She told him. There was a pause as she tried not to cry. “It’s good to know that my son is a good person in any timeline. Because in my timeline he is dead.” She finally told him.
"I don't know what happened with him between me to when I was the Kyle you knew. It might have been hard to talk about," All that he knew was that he went to the past which was how he met Sarah and John. "Yeah, it looks like I did. I'm sorry about your timeline," From what he's found out on Galador it was John that was supposed to lead them.
He looked over to the older woman, "It's okay to be sad." He was feeling that way since arriving. Maybe because he had a moment to actually feel everyone he lost in his young life. "Especially here. It's so quiet it's hard not to think about all of it."
“I have spent my whole life mourning the death of my lover and son. It’s made me a bitter, old bitch. I bet you are disappointed in me. If it wasn’t for the help of something else giving me purpose, I might not still be alive.” Sarah confessed.
Kyle shook his head, "I'm not. I didn't really have any expectations." He was too young to be told about Sarah back home and just heard a little bit during his time here. He wasn't going to judge her at all. Especially before he got the chance to really know her. "Sometimes that's all we can ask for, something to give a reason to stay alive." Something that was needed during a seemingly endless war.
Sarah nodded. “Yes, that’s the logical thing. And, even as an adult you had no expectations. You came for me because you loved me. You were always my voice of reason. What to do when that reason was gone? I was getting drunk every night and sleeping it off. Then I suddenly get these texts from a mysterious number. The texts give me coordinates of a place and time for a Terminator to hunt. That was my life for a long time. Just hunting and killing Terminators. That was my purpose. Here, I have to find it again.” She frowned showing the lines on her weathered face. “You have to do the same. I can’t hold you back from finding a new love and starting another family. You have my permission to.” She said.
Kyle wasn't sure if he should answer that. If he could answer that. It didn't seem like there was an answer for what to do when the voice of reason was gone. "Well, maybe try not to slip back into that. John's here, another universe John but still him. He could be a reason," he didn't want her to go on aimlessly. He had school and learning how to live a normal life to be his purpose or whatever. "You're my family, John and Derek too," He didn't have to see her romantically to say that. They had a kid together. Nothing would change that. "I don't know. Not sure I'm built for the dating scene." He felt so awkward in this time. "But it does seem like our timing is just a little bit off." He threw in a small joke with time travel.
Sarah shrugged. “My John was killed by another Model 101. Those things are the bane of my existence. Yes, you are all my family.” She laughed at his joke. “We always had bad timing. It’s too bad the gem can’t make me a teenager again or you grow up a little bit.” She said.
"They say there's no metal here. Nothing we have to worry about. Doesn't seem real," Kyle still hadn't been sleeping more than an hour or two because there weren’t any defenses at their apartment. It was hard to sleep when he didn't feel safe. "Nothing's going to get this John. I swear." He was a bit scrawny at this age but that didn't mean he wouldn't protect his family and those he cared about. Hell, he would risk his life to save people he didn't know either. That was something she knew. "That would be cool but I still wouldn't be...” He wouldn't be near her age. He didn't live that long.
“No metal here, yet. But, we could get the reprogrammed ones. Those aren’t bad to work with. But just as annoying with no people skills, or facial expressions. It’s still enough to make me uneasy. I met two of them. One was reprogrammed. The other one wasn’t reprogrammed. Both miraculously developed a conscious. The mysterious texter turned out to be the model 101 that killed John. He developed a conscious and took it upon himself to help me.” She explained. Then she laughed again. “Yeah I’m old! Just say it! I can be your grandma.” She teased.
There was that word, yet. He would think if they could show up then it was only a matter of time before things started following them. "Marcus showed up here. He's a hybrid... kind of," Honestly, he wasn't sure what Marcus was other than a friend. No amount of metal would change that but he didn't seem like how she described. "Like... Cameron." Just one his brother mentioned. He didn't know if it would mean anything to this Sarah. "I didn't know they could do that. Develop a conscious. Isn't that against they're programming?" He didn't think that Skynet would like that.
"You're not old. Just don't know if it's possible. For me to show up your age," He would be fine with showing up here as old as she was. It would mean that he didn't die when everyone said he did. That he made it somehow but he knew better now.
“Until I met Grace, I didn’t even know about hybrids. And I have heard about Marcus and Cameron in ear shot. I think Grace would be happy to know there were other people who are like her here.” She explained. “It beats me, Kyle. Other than I know that those machines can be taught things. My John taught one to value life when he was just eleven. So, there’s that.” She shrugged thinking about it. “I know it would be great to see you show up old and grey like me. That would mean that you didn’t die so young. But even if you didn’t, I’m not so sure that I’m programmed to date. I’m an old, bitter, mournful alcoholic. Not quite dating material.”
"Not sure if Cameron is like Marcus or Grace," This was the first time he was hearing about another hybrid. As far as he was aware the other one was all metal, Cameron. He didn't ask too many questions about her so it's possible that Sarah knew more about her than he did. He shook his head lightly, "Is anyone really programmed to date? I haven't known someone my age in years. Pretty sure I missed when they taught guys to do that." He wasn't sure about her. She didn't seem so bad to him. "You shouldn't be alone." He didn't want to think of her alone. Her or Derek. He didn't mind so much if he went by himself.
Sarah smiled. “You shouldn’t be alone either. I think we’ve both established that this time it’s different. I want you to date someone that makes you happy, Kyle.” She leaned over and given our age difference. But, you kissed him on the cheek. “This might sound weird or gross to you have no idea how long I have waited to touch you again.” She sighed. “I’m glad we could meet and I wish you well.”
Kyle wasn’t sure why but he felt like she was breaking up with him. Maybe not in the truest sense of the word. He knew they were important to each other, they had a kid together. Only the gem had brought them in at such different ages. If it had been different than maybe this conversation would have been different. He wasn’t sure what to say about dating someone else. He hadn’t dated anyone before. He would just have to see how that went. He just looked at her as she kissed his cheek. “Its okay, it’s not gross,” it was actually kind of sweet. Weird but sweet. “I’m glad we met too,” he didn’t have to wonder what she was like. Although he was sure that she wasn’t the same person that future him had saved. Not after everything that happened to her.
