Part I
Marcus sat on his bed, it seemingly empty, a spot for one that used to be filled by another named Blair until she moved on after he died. So he had to start at square one. He sat in a seat and typed out words "You up for a talk, Sarah? It's about a lot of things."
Sarah returned his text. "Yeah. I'll meet you at your apartment in a few minutes." She found his apartment and knocked on the door. She didn't really know what to expect from this man that she just met.
Marcus was calm, he seemed to wear his resistance jacket "Hello, Sarah. Welcome. Come sit. Want a drink or something?
"Sure, you got a beer?" She asked. She took a seat and tried not to stare at him. "Are you...are you really what you say you are?" She finally said after some silence.
"I do." "Hold on, I'll grab one for both of us." Marcus grabbed two beers and nodded "Yeah, I'm a cyborg, half human and half terminator. It took me a long time to realize I wasn't going to ever become human again."
"You mean that you can eat and drink stuff?" Sarah was trying her best to comprehend it all. "A cyborg was sent to kill me before I gave birth to my son. So....I'm not sure what to think." She explained.
"Right, yes. It's really complicated. I don't know what cyborg was sent to kill you, but something like that model or a copy tried to kill me and your adult son in my timeline."
"I'm more than I was programmed to be. My human side gave me free will to fight back.
Sarah stared at him again, still trying to fathom. "It seems like Skynet doesn't give up no matter what year it is. It was a T800 Model 101 they sent back to kill me. No shred of human free will in that thing." She explained.
Marcus frowned "I can tell you something about Skynet, they put a chip inside of my head that allows Skynet to control our thoughts and everything we do and control our memories. Well I ripped out that chip ripping Skynet out from controlling what i did. I feel like myself."
"So they were trying to make a better model, but you turned on them. Bet they didn't expect that." She took a sip of her beer. "So my question still is...why me? I'm a bitter alcoholic. Not exactly dating material." She chuckled.
Marcus sighed "Like I said Blair moved on when I died years ago, she never came back." "I doubt I'm any better, I'm hardly dating material myself, I drink, I've rot in prison for most of my life and I died a hero saving your son, but when I came back, I fell to the background again. Nobody wants to date a killer half terminator
Sarah shrugged. "No one wants a bitter old woman. So I suppose we're two peas in a pod. My son lives with me. I mean, the younger version of him does. Is that going to be weird for you?" She asked curiously.
Marcus shrugged "As long as he doesn't mind having a half terminator around."
"I heard that there was a Terminator living with them for several years passing as his sister. I don't know how I allowed that." She chuckled. "I'm sure it wouldn't bother him. But, we don't trust people easily. I haven't been with anyone since Kyle died. That's a long time."
Marcus nodded "Kyle Reese? He was a good man. Met him and became friends with him in my timeline, he was a teen. He saved me.”
"He saves a lot of people. The first thing he said to me was 'Come with me if you want to live'. I still didn't trust him immediately but there was a kindness to his eyes." Sarah described him. "Kyle is John's father. But the Kyle that you knew didn't know yet."
Marcus frowned. “John’s father? Wow I never knew that. But him and star ran a pocket Resistance base themselves before i came around. Kyle learned a few things from me.”
"I wonder if older John kept his identity a secret from Kyle to protect him from being a target? That seems like something my boy would do. Our family is a result of time travel, in case you didn't know." She explained.
Marcus nodded “maybe that’s true.” Though I never knew Kyle went back in time to find you. Time travel can be confusing.”
Sarah laughed. "Hell yeah it can be. I try not to think about it too much. In my timeline, a T800 killed John and I spent about twenty or so years alone just killing terminators."
Marcus frowned “I’m sorry about john in your timeline. I wish I could have done something.”
She shrugged. "It happened...but I have him back now. So that’s what matters. Something that might interest you is that the Terminator model that killed John eventually developed a conscious and had a wife and a family. That just blew my mind. He named himself Carl."
Marcus blinked "Interesting, very interesting. I didn't think that could happen, but it happened for me, perhaps it could happen for Carl."
"So now that you know John is my son, and Kyle is his father, are you still okay with that? I realize that's going to be a bit weird. I know you were close to John." She explained taking another sip of her beer.
Marcus took a drink "Yeah, mostly as friends... but would it change the timeline now that I'm dating you? Would John change? It's going to take some getting used to. I'm not sure what young Kyle would think of me. That means John and Kate would be a son and daughter so far."
Sarah chuckled. "No, it wouldn't change things. I already gave birth to John, he's here. The only thing that might change is if Kyle was never with me, in the past. See it all happened when I was just a girl in 1984. Now there is another me I'm assuming from the same time. I haven't talked to her much yet." She shrugged. "Time travel can mess with your head if you let it."
Marcus could only shake his head a bit, groaning "Yeah, time travel does that. After all the other stories I've heard from the others about time travel and what it can do, it seems like a whole new experience. I've never done it. I just woke up in 2018.” Marcus sighed. "Would you still accept me for my past? Even if you knew it?
Sarah studied him for a moment. "I have already accepted you. I wouldn't be here if I didn't. Everyone deserves a second chance. Besides, I have killed people and done all kinds of evil things. I'm probably wanted in all fifty states back home. I hid out in Mexico to avoid the authorities." She laughed again. "Now, that's not going to prevent the fact that I have a lot of questions for you. I'm just trying not to bombard you with them all at once. My John would do that, so be prepared for it.”
Marcus nodded "Don't feel bad. I'm ready for any question you could throw at me, but if you ask about Skynet. I try not to think about that monster AI anymore if I can. Even though Skynet and John accepted peace in my timeline, i still feel its shaky."
"See? Nobody could understand what i went through other than another person with a criminal record." Marcus took a breath of relief.
Sarah smiled at him. It was rare that she did smile. "Exactly. And speaking of, That's why you need to talk to Derek Reese. He's been through a lot too. In order to understand him, you need to know what's happened in his life. I'm not claiming to know everything. But, John told me that he was a Skynet camp prisoner and they tortured him. They also took one of his soldiers and made an AI copy out of her. That's bound to mess someone up."
Marcus looked up and frowned "I've heard stories those were the most horrible places you could go. In my timeline, Kyle and Star were taken away to one and I never got to see where they went, until I decided to find Kyle for John. But a AI copy? Hell, that's horrible. It almost seemed like Project Angel, where you think your body was going to a good project then Cyberdyne takes over and uses it for horrible purposes.
"Yes, and I was told that once the subjects were copied, they were terminated. It sounds like the shape shifting T1000 models that we encountered too. So, that's what happened to you? Your body was given over to Project Angel? How old do you think you are?" She asked curiously.
Marcus looked up "It's a long story, I signed my body away to Project Angel. Dr. Serena came in my prison cell on the last day before my execution and told me every day it was for a good cause and she wouldn't leave until I signed. The only way i could make her go away is if I gave her a kiss. So I signed not knowing what was in store for me. What a fool I was at the time."
"My age? I figured I would of been in my 40's. Not in prison but you know."
"I wonder if she had good intentions, until Skynet too it over. Damn Skynet." She sighed and sat back in her chair thinking about everything. "I'm not going to lie, that's some terrible shit right there. But, I think it makes us understand each other more. I get nightmares and visions from it all sometimes. I suppose it’s a form of post-traumatic stress...my whole family has it in some form or another." She explained.
Marcus looked up "I can only imagine the images every day. PTSD is a horrible thing to have but not surprising anymore. He sighed "Perhaps there was more to the story. I don't even know what Skynet did with my other memories, perhaps they only put false memories in. Nobody knows."
"That's horrible. But, now you can make the memories you want to now. I'm glad that you chose to do that with me." She smiled again.
Marcus nodded "Of course, there's always the new memories there is to create with you of course. I'd share it with you. Leave the hurt and guilt of the past. Let this new year be the beginning of something new."
Sarah studied him from across the table and reached over to gently touch his hand and hold it. "I haven't done this in a long time."
Marcus smiled, perhaps in a long time "I haven't either." He held his Resistance jacket around the two of them.
She started to touch his chest...there was metal in there? She blinked. "Sorry. That was too forward."
Marcus blinks, not used to Sarah's touching of his metal as he wrapped his Resistance jacket around the two of them. "You alright?"
“You’re really metal there? Do weigh like a thousand pounds?” She laughed trying to lighten up the situation.
"I am metal there, but I'm not sure if I weigh 1000 pounds, Marcus lightly smiled. "Who knows anymore."
She took her hand away from his chest and gave a sheepish smile. “Do you feel on your skin like a normal human?” She curiously asked again.
Marcus nodded "Yeah, I feel pain just like humans do, it's odd sometimes. I can feel psychological pain as well. I've gone through a minefield and blew up; I felt every bit of that.”
Sarah blinked in surprise. “So they put you back together like Humpty Dumpty?”
Marcus awkwardly coughed lightly "Well, not quite that bad, but they strung me up on a missile silo. The Human Resistance is quite the welcome wagon."
“I can imagine my son probably didn’t accept you at first. But don’t tell Derek about that. He would have too much fun blowing you up. And I’m serious.” She sighed.
Marcus frowned "It was Barnes and John at first, Kate found out and had John's solider Barnes knock me out."
Sarah groaned. “I’m sorry. John was raised to hate machines. I did that. I’m going to be honest and admit that I still carry some hatred towards them. But you...you act pretty human to me. You feel human too. I suppose that meeting my friend Grace helped me get over this preconceived notion that all machines are bad. She’s a bit like you, she’s part cyborg. “She explained.
Marcus nodded "I remember talking to her a few times. I ran across her one day on the network, she seemed pretty interesting."
“And a machine killed John’s father. So he isn’t that welcoming towards them. Grace helped me though. I just don’t know what my John would think of you.” She admitted.
Marcus nodded "I expect I'd come to respect John so much and see him as a friend, but it took a while and a hell lot of lot of fights together to understand each other."
Sarah nodded. “It’s that way with all of the Connors and Reeses. We don’t trust easily but you can earn our trust. John told me a lot about Derek too.”
Marcus nodded "I'll fight to earn Derek's trust. He's probably going to be the hardest to get to know."
Sarah nodded again and frowned. “He is anti-social and keeps to himself. He has been really quiet lately.”
Marcus frowned "Should I go...check on him or at least meet him?"
“I think you should try to meet him. I think Kyle would appreciate that you did.” She shrugged.
Marcus nodded "As long as you don't mind waiting for me later.” He gives Sarah a number "Call if you find you need something or otherwise."
