Some Demons You Can't Shake Who: Jessica Jones Where: Freedomtown, her apartment, then the rooftop of her building When: Monday, 16th December - evening What: Facing her demons Rating: M, for mentions of abuse Status: Closed; Complete
Jessica Jones had adapted to life on an alien planet in an alternate universe quite well, all things considered. She continued with her work, but rather than cheating spouses she took on all kinds of cases. Children from future universes, alternate universes, paternity tests, drug deals, weapons deals, off-world cases, mobsters, rebels - you name it, she knew about it. It made life varied and interesting. For which she was grateful. She also fell in love with and was engaged to a woman. She'd never considered dating a woman before much less being married to one, but there was something about Serena Cooper that had broken down most of her well built up walls. They both accepted each other for who they were. Jessica couldn't remember loving anyone the way that she loved Serena in her entire life.
Still. While Serena had likely heard her say the name in her sleep Jessica had never told her about Kilgrave. She'd alluded to abuse, but had never said the name. Never wanted to bring him into their home. And yet for a brief second he'd found her. And that was enough. She'd seen a man out on the street that looked so much like him that she'd almost killed him on the spot. But she stopped when she saw him interact with others. Kilgrave would never be so kind, never smile so easily, never... a lot of things. She'd almost killed that man. Almost ripped him limb from limb. Almost.
She stopped, took a few breaths and turned in the other direction as fast as she could. She then picked up three bottles of bourbon and went back to the apartment/office that she shared with Serena, drank two bottles, made a mess while doing so and decided that the apartment was too small and took the fire escape up to the roof, leaving the window open and discarding her jacket on her ascent. "What are you doing? What are you doing?" She muttered, pacing and slapping the sides of her head.
"Yes. What are you doing, Jessica? Don't you know that I'll always be with you?" Kilgrave whispered into her ear. "Good girlfriend, fiancée (really, by the way?), but you'll never forget about me. I'll always be here. Right here. With you. Always. Don't you ever wonder why you never told her about me? I'm your deep, dark secret, Jessica. The one that you can never be rid of. I'm the voice in your head telling you--"
"Shut up! Shut up!" She shouted, shoving at empty air and promptly falling to the ground when she made no contact. She curled into a ball and started to cry uncontrollably. Why could she never be rid of him? Even after all of this time?
"Because I'm a part of you, Jessica," he answered. "I'll always be a part of you."
