what Kyle's arrival
status ongoing
Derek had already been able to explain things to John about Kyle. Now it was his turn to talk to Kyle about it. Kyle was just a teenager when he had arrived and that was something to get used to. He picked up Kyle from the arrival station, and got his belongings packed in the car. “Kyle, there is something that I need to talk to you about before we get to the apartment. There is another boy living with us. And...” He ran a hand through his hair and sighed.” He ‘s your biological son.” He explained. Kyle was still getting his head around being on Galador. He was waiting for it to be a trick and for Terminators to come out. It was hard to accept that he was actually pulled to a different universe, different planet, and was in a different time then he was before. At least it was easier with Derek there even if he was older than he remembered. He held Derek put what little he had into the car. He was about to walk around to the passenger side when the older Reese spoke. "My.. s.. what?" He wasn't even eighteen years old yet. How was it he had a son? Derek laughed softly. “I know life is funny like that, isn’t it? Simply put, time travel. But to explain it to you, I will have to tell you most of my own story. It involves time travel too. You and I both grew up to be soldiers in my time, under the command of a man named John Connor. We fought in a rebellion called the Resistance. It was a long war. I got captured in Sky Net Camps and rescued..” He paused. Then opened the car door for Kyle. “But there is more... you always had a thing for John Connor’s mother. He gave you a picture of her that you carried around with you. I used to think it was creepy and gross it being the C.O.’s mother. One day you just disappeared. I never found out why. Then John gave me a mission and sent me back in time to 2007, and build a safe house. That was when I ran into Sarah Connor and she had a son ironically named John Connor. She didn’t tell me we were related but she didn’t have to. I pieced it together in my head.” He shrugged. “John is the boy living with us but he was is almost the same age as you. Now, I know that’s a lot. Did you have any questions? I can do my best to answer them.” He offered as they made their way to the apartment. And Kyle thought showing up on an alien planet was weird. It was turning out that he just hadn't reached everything that would happen back home. He wasn't sure how to process it all. He was used to his life as it was back home, fighting for survival. All of this seemed like too much. It wasn't like he didn't want a kid or a future but he always thought he was experience first before learning about it. He knew they were on their way back to the apartment where Derek was lived with John. He had only just learned about him. He was starting to panic but tried not to show it. He looked away from Derek and stared out at the window at all the fully intact building, the plants, and people seemingly living in peace. He could feel his heartbeat speeding up as he was still trying to wrap his head around everything. Derek pulled the vehicle over to the front door of the apartment. He turned to Kyle, knowing almost exactly what was going on in the boy’s mind. “Hey, Kyle... it’s ok if you want to take a moment. When my men and I traveled back to 2017, I couldn’t fathom all of the buildings and humans in place. We gorged ourselves at the nearest food court. Its a lot to take in, and I’m here for you. I’m still trying to do something with myself too.” He spoke to his brother calmly. Kyle wasn't sure what to say first. It wasn't just being in a place without machines. Being safe and actually believing he was safe. He was sixteen and he was a dad with a woman he never met. And it was John Connor, the John Connor. He wasn't sure how to process any of it. Derek was so much older and seemed to know way more than he did. "I kind of feel sick," Kyle said as he continued to look out the window. It wasn't like he had to pretend with Derek. It wasn't like he ever did before. Derek was quiet for a moment. He gave Kyle a few minutes to process things. "You are definitely not the Kyle I knew." He finally spoke softly. "But, just calm down, little brother. If you need to vomit do so outside of my truck, I just got this thing." He said seriously. Then there was a few more moments of silence. "Even though John is your son, you don't have to worry about raising him. Sarah did all of the work herself, and I think she did a great job. He is far from the John Connor that I knew...but that's neither here nor now. I have been trying to wrap my head around all of this. And I think the gem gave us all the gift of being able to know each other as a family. We don't have to worry quite so much about the metal following us. If they do, there are vampires, witches, superheroes and everything in between that can help us fight them. Plus, I sincerely hope that Sarah Connor comes one day so that you can meet her and know that she is one hell of a woman, and that she raised one hell of a son." Derek gave a smile. "I didn't mean for that to sound like a pep talk. But you look like you could use one." Kyle wasn't sure what Derek meant by that. He was only sixteen, how was he supposed to be the man that Derek remembered him as. It wasn't like he had been brought to an alien planet before and told he was a father. There was probably a reason John Connor in their time didn't seek him out and say that he was his son. It's a lot to process. "And you're not the Derek I knew either," he said but clearly. "I'm not going to throw up." He didn't think so at least. He just felt sick. He listened to his brother talk about John and Sarah. "Kind of wish everyone from Earth would show up here. All the humans," So they could have some peace again. He wasn't sure who was going to take care of Star while he was here. Derek gave a sigh of relief when he heard Kyle say he wasn't going to throw up. "No, I'm not the Derek that you knew. For one, I'm a lot older. Then, I spent years in a Skynet prisoner camp being experimented on by metal." He showed Kyle the prisoner tattoo he still had. "I can't guarantee you will like me all of the time either. Being a prisoner, and having you disappear on me with out being told why...it turned me into a cold hearted, cynical person. When I traveled back in time, I took that as an opportunity to change our future. I did what I had to for us. I tortured people and murdered people in cold blood to get what I wanted. Here, I don't have to be that kind of person. I almost wish the gem had brought me back as a kid too. So that we could all be kids together. But, that didn't happen." Derek gave another rare smile. "You don't realize how good you got it." He paused again. "If you need time, we don't have to go in right away. John will be there when you are ready." It wasn't like Kyle hadn't been living in the same world since he was a kid. He knew how hard it was but hadn't been a prisoner in a Skynet camp before. Not for any real length of time. He had been rescued before anything too horrible could happen to him but just seeing it was enough to see how bad it was. "You're still my brother," He didn't care what Derek did before. He wasn't the same person but he was still his brother. That would never change no matter what happened. He didn't ask who he killed or why he tortured people. He didn't want Derek to feel like he had to justify himself. "Again, we're brothers. I don't like you part of the time anyway." He smiled as he looked over to the older Reese. "Do you think I could walk around a bit?" He always had be careful back home. It would be nice to take a walk to think without fearing for his life. Derek gave Kyle a playful punch on the arm at his comment about not liking him part of the time. Then he nodded. “It will help you get reacquainted with society again to see standing buildings and trees. I admit that during my mission back in 2007, I didn’t have a lot of time to appreciate all of the vegetation and people. I was mostly running from T800’s or some shit like that.” He motioned for Kyle to follow him to a park. “For John’s birthday I took him to the park we used to play ball at. He has never seen you before so it was a chance for him to see us as young, innocent kids before the war. Then there was Jessie, my girlfriend. I’m not sure that I want to talk about her right now.” He sighed. “What about you, do you have any questions for me?” He asked. Kyle couldn't help but smile after that remark. He got out of the car and walked with his brother. He was listening to what traveling in time was like for him. This was a little different. Not only time travel but now they were on a different planet. "So the past isn't even safe from them," he said mostly to himself. "How do we know there's no metal here? What if they came here the same way we did?" Of course he was already trying to burst his safe bubble. "He never met me before? Did I go back to the future?" He was trying to be hopeful but he was thinking that he died. It wasn't the first hint about it. Derek had mentioned that Sarah raised him. There was no mention of him. Derek carefully listened to Kyle’s questions. “There could be metal here and there could be metal that comes through. That’s why we can’t let our guard down. Here, there are superheroes and vampires and all kinds of people that can help us fight. In my time, John had learned how to reprogram Terminators and sent them back to help us. Doesn’t mean his reprogramming was perfect though. We had a few go rogue.” He gave a moment of silence as he considered the answer to the next question. “Ultimately the best person to ask about your next question is Sarah. That all has to do with your top secret mission that was never disclosed to me. I can tell you what I learned from process of elimination and from talking to Sarah.” He took a deep breath. “Yeah...your mission had something to do with traveling back in time to protect Sarah Connor from a Terminator sent to kill her. You were killed protecting her. But you guys had John before you were killed. I know it sounds crazy. But, as soon as I saw Sarah Connor I knew she was your type. She’s badass and can fight metal as good as the rest of us combined. You were lucky to find a woman like her.” Derek grinned. Fighting and surviving was his life for pretty much as long as he could remember. It was hard not to think of it following them there. "You're right. We shouldn't let our guard down. Even with superheroes and everything," It felt weird to be walking in the park, walking anywhere without a weapon. "The gem could bring her here, maybe. They talked about the gem at the welcome center and said it brings people here all the time," Just like it brought them here but there was the chance it wouldn't. "I left him without a dad," It was the thing he was caught up on it. "It sounds like I went out like a hero though. Sounds like she won you over." That was enough to sell Kyle on Sarah. He couldn't imagine what he could be like in the future. "Now I'll probably end up with a girl I met in the library. You know they said I have to sign up for school." He wasn't even sure what grade he'd be in. Derek nodded. “I’m going to have to find out what the concealed carry laws here are. But yeah I have this. It’s smaller than I want.” He showed Kyle his hand gun that had been hidden. “Yes, you were killed. But it was bu a Terminator. You haven’t seen the newer versions. They are much tougher to kill.” He explained. “Sarah and I didn’t always get along. In fact she tried to kill me the first time she saw me. She also didn’t like being lied to. I had to lie several times to her and John about mission stuff.” He continued walking with Kyle. “We went by the family name of Baum. But here we don’t have to lie about our names. Who knows, Sarah might come in sometime. John had a girlfriend for a short time, but she was murdered by my girlfriend. I for one hope that Jessie doesn’t come through. I’m wanting to start over and create the life that I have always wanted.” He said. "I'm more of a shot gun kind of guy," Kyle wasn't sure he'd feel safe carrying around a small pistol. "But it's much harder to hide." He forgot that there used to be laws about carrying around guns. It wasn't as if he had much of a need before Skynet. Not sure if that made him feel better. He knew he wouldn't back down to protect someone but dying at the hands of a Terminator was his worst free. He figured it was everyone's worst fear. "Don't lie to me, okay?" he understood why Derek may have had to lie to John and to Sarah, even though he didn't really know either of them. "I'm not a kid so if something happens, tell me." It wasn't like he had any reason to think his brother would lie to him. He could have lied about being killed by a Terminator but he was glad he didn't. "Yeah, she might. Not sure what she'd think of me. Pretty sure she didn't meet me at sixteen," It would suck to die that young but he was sure if happened further into the future. "So we start over. If the metal come, we handle it." They protect John. "Until then I have to figure out how to be a teenager. So that's cool I guess." Derek gave a mischievous smirk. “I’m more of a shotgun person myself too. But I can conceal this easily.” He took a breath. “No offense but compared to the Kyle that I knew, you are a kid. It’s going to be tough for you to learn to follow rules, and authority..,as well as learning how to be a teenager. But, I’m here to help and John will help you too. I have never lied to you in my life because you are family. I’m sure it would be awkward for Sarah to see you so young but she knows that you traveled back in time for her. She loves you too.” He reached over to give Kyle a rare hug. “I’m going to do my best to be a parent to you and John.” Kyle wasn't so sure he could be a teenager. He could barely remember what they were like when he was a kid. So this might be a challenge. "You know I met, John. Well when he was older," It was because of John that he was still alive. He was sure this time travel business was going to give him a headache. "You don't need to worry about me, Derek," he said as he looked out to the park. "I think I'll be alright here." He would just have to get used to it, get his mind to accept it as actual peace. He was thinking that would be the hardest part. Since he was already thinking about how he was going to sleep tonight. He didn't normally feel safe in a place that four walls and he assumed there would be a lookout because there wasn't a need for it. “John was my CO. I spent a lot of time with him and I even spent his thirtieth birthday with him. He got drunker than a skunk.” Derek chuckled at the memory. “He kept his identity from me a secret too. But like I said, it wasn’t difficult to figure out once Sarah told me about the past.” He patted Kyle on the back. “I know you will do fine here. Ready to meet your son?” He asked curiously. Kyle could understand why John wouldn't have told them. It might have changed things. Stopped him from being born in the first place. That was the risk with time travel but it didn't really seem to matter here. "Getting your nephew drunk?" He laughed. He was only teasing because of the comment of John getting drunk. "Yeah, yeah I'm ready," Part of him didn't want to leave the park but that was only because he couldn't remember the last time he saw anything like it. Something that looked peaceful and the people weren't terrified. It was everything they fought to have again. .... continued below |
