Derek:
Derek Reese still couldn’t believe that suddenly they were in another time and planet. But he was happy his nephew had arrived to Galador as well as Kyle. That was going to take some explaining to John. He was nervous about how it would go.
John:
Derek and John traveled to their new apartment in Freedomtown. It was still pretty bare at the moment but he knew John would do his own things with it. “Here is our new place, John. And no metal in sight.” He offered a rare smile. “I will need to go pick up a family member and new roommate soon. But I need to tell you about who he is. He is Kyle Reese. My brother and your father. But he’s really young from the time line he came from. He’s sixteen and has no idea about who you are.”
Derek:
John looked up from where he was attempting to decide on how they may want to decorate and nodded. "I had a feeling that was him. I think that he knows who I am by reputation, but has no idea what he is to me. Just like how older me decided to keep things."
John:
He took a deep breath, shrugging, "maybe now that we're here, and we don't have to worry about resisting the machines anymore, I'm thinking about changing that. We just have to figure out the best way to go about doing that."
Derek:
Derek stopped in his tracks and gave John an icy stare. “Even though we are not on Earth anymore, there is still a chance one of those things could come through. And when it does, we have to be ready for it. We never drop our guard. Not even for a second. Because the moment we do that’s what gets us killed.”
John:
John groaned in frustration when his uncle shot back with exactly what he thought that he would. "Does it really still have to be us though?" John questioned with a hint of reasoning in voice. "I mean sure, I will always fight to defend my home, but it's not like we are the only ones able to here. We're just humans. There are not only aliens here but superheroes and supernatural creatures. This place is more of a melting pot than what the United States ever will be."
Derek:
Derek scowled. His nephew could be so nonchalant about this. Then he sighed after some silence, he had to agree. “I understand that, John. But you have to remember, this was my life. This was my whole life. I have to find a way to live that is completely different from the old way. For the first time, I’m living my life with out a set mission. It’s going to take some getting used to. As is these other people here. I can’t fathom superheroes or vampires being here. It’s crazy.” He explained.
John:
John exhaled slowly, "it's been my entire life too, Uncle Derek! That's why I don't understand why you don't hate it at least a fraction of the amount that I do. We finally have a chance to stop and relax, to pause and breathe, but you? You want to hunker down and build a command center for something that more than likely isn't inevitable here." He sighed, running his fingers through his hair, "sorry. I've just spent my entire life preparing to be someone that I have absolutely no desire to be. Excuse me for wanting to explore the possibility of a completely different life."
Derek:
“I know that here you can lead a different life and be who you want to be. I want that for you, because I never got it. I’m just reminding you, don’t forget about the old ways. You might even meet other versions of yourself and your parents. I ran into that myself. This is going to take some getting used to for me. Especially dealing with a younger brother again. But I think we can do it. We can all do it together, right?” Derek asked John.
John:
John smiled softly, nodding. "Are you from a time where I had already sent Kyle back to save my mom and make me?" He paused, blinking. "I really wish that was weirder to me than it is. We have so many alternate timelines in our world, only to come to a world where we're fiction and countless other worlds have come in this strange mish-mash of realities."
Derek:
Derek thought for a moment. “It depends on how you look at it. Time travel and alternate timelines are very confusing. It’s best for you not to think about it all of the time or it can make you go crazy. I have dealt with alternate timelines before. I can see that I’m from a timeline similar to yours. When I got sent here, I was on a mission and trying to save Savanna Weaver. I don’t know if she got rescued or not. Also you might come across another me, or another you, or your mother. Who knows.” He shrugged. “I’m here now with you, and that’s what matters.”
John:
"I already don't really think much of it. That's how my mom raised me. Time travel alters timelines. I only exist because of time travel. Especially since my mom was originally supposed to die from a brain tumor back in the late 90s. The Kyle that's here probably isn't the same one who came back in time, but he's still my father to me. Just like you're still my Uncle, no matter what. We're family, Derek." John smiled brightly, giving a firm nod. "We just have to lie in the now and go with what we're given here."
Derek
Derek observed John for a moment and offered a rare smile. “I’m always thinking about the future. My whole life has been a mission. So forgive me if I don’t know what to do with myself for a while. I guess we can all work on getting to know each other as a family. And I can try to get a job. I’m used to pick pocketing to get where I am.” He sighed. “This is going to be different, but we can do it.”
John:
John laughed, nodding. "I think that it really boils down to the conditions of the world during the time each of us grew up. I had other kids around me, I went to school. I knew that I was getting ready for something, but it wasn't there yet. That's the big difference between you and I."
Derek:
“I can’t wait to see from what time your mother shows up.” Derek said laughing. “It would be ironic if kid Sarah showed up. My brother and I had to grow up fast. We had to take care of ourselves after the day Skynet sent the bombs. But here we don’t have to worry too much about that part of our lives. I’m looking forward to getting to know you for you.” Derek finally gave John a hug. “Let’s do this.”
