"You have no idea how much I love - "
Who: Deanna and Theo (with a brief appearance by Ryan)
Where: Theo's Apartment
When: Monday, September 9th
What: Meeting the new neighbor, giving Deanna some reassurance
Rating: Low; brief mention of abuse
Status: Closed; complete
After couch surfing for a few days, Ryan was allotted an apartment in Gotham. It was a cool place! It had the bare necessities, like a bed and a fridge -- which she hadn't stocked yet. Which was why she braved it and knocked on her neighbors door, still dressed in the clothes that she arrived in (which was her next task for the day!). When a cute blonde answered the door she grinned. "Soooo.... hi. I'm your new neighbor. You wouldn't happen to have a cup of sugar, would you? And coffee... and milk." She wrinkled her nose. "Mostly in that order." Okay, so she needed to do a lot of things, shut up. "I may or may not need to go shopping." Okay, she was also trying not to be a letch. This woman was gorgeous! "Oh. I'm Ryan, by the way." She offered a hand to shake.
"Hi! I'm Deanna." The other woman told her, shaking her hand with a bright smile. Dee would never be called the sharpest person around, but she was sure the nicest. "C'mon in. I remember what it was like to just poof on in like that. Maybe I have a few things I could give you to get you started..." She really was as sweet as she was sexy. And the little shorts and white tanktop she wore definitely showed the sexiness.
"Oh no. Seriously dude, don't go out of your way," Ryan said, meaning the odds and ends that Dee offered. She couldn't help but subtly check her out as she entered the apartment behind her. She hadn't had anything approaching a sex drive for a while, so it was nice to know that she still had one! "How long've you been here now?"
"Oh, wow. Over a year... I honestly stopped keeping track, to be honest. It's great here!" She said with a bubbly little bounce, gathering up some coffee, sugar, creamer, and an old coffee pot she'd gotten when she first arrived. "I mean, I didn't exactly have dream-life at home, so... something like this? Definitely a big step forward."
Ryan nodded, thankful that Dee was going out of her way for her. "So what all did you do back home that makes this place so fu--fantastic?" She was trying not to swear so much around new people. It was kind of adorable, really. Especially when she could come across as 'grr' with the way she looked. "I mean, if you don't mind me asking."
"Nothing much... just jumped from one bad relationship to the next. Barely graduated high school, worked as a stripper for almost six years... I guess I was just grateful for a chance to start over in a place where almost nobody knew me." Dee explained, putting all the items into a bag. "Can I get you anything to eat or drink? I don't really get visitors often, so... you know... kinda exciting."
Well, points for honesty, right? "I guess I can see the appeal in starting over, but you seem like a sweet ass lady. I bet you'd fit in anywhere just fine."
Before she could decline or accept the offer of a drink, a taller brunette woman entered the room, hair dishevelled, dressed in a nightgown and a robe (which she quickly tied around her waist). "I thought I heard voices," Theo murmured.
"Hi Theo!" Dee said with a happy smile as she waved to her lover. "Theo, this is our new neighbor, Ryan! I'm giving her a few things to get her started."
"Hey. It's cool to meet you." Hearing the concern and (slight) hostility in Theo's thoughts, she offered a hand to shake. "Your lady was sweet enough to give me the nectar of life to start my day."
Theo hesitated (since her ability was all about touch) and gently shook Ryan's hand. She got a brief glimpse of Ryan's life before her arrival and visibly relaxed. This woman was no threat. "She's a sweetheart," Theo agreed, giving Dee's shoulder a possessive squeeze.
Adorably, Dee beamed like a lightbulb when Theo touched her like that. With everything she'd been through, this was a girl who knew she could have a lover any time she wanted... but truly felt happy and proud and LUCKY when someone showed her true affection. "Really, nobody should have to go without coffee. That's just cruel."
"Right?" Ryan agreed. "ANYWAY. I'll leave you two" fine bitches " lovely ladies to enjoy the rest of your morning. Thanks for this." She indicated the bag that Dee had given her. "And hey, once I get my studio open I expect you two to be my first customers."
"Studio?" Theo prompted as she ushered Ryan over to the door.
"Ya huh. I do mad ass tattoos, guys. Think about it." She flashed them an exaggerated wink and was on her way. Coffee. Glorious, glorious coffee was almost hers.
Dee bit her bottom lip and looked at Theo. "You know, I wouldn't be opposed to getting one..." She said, blinking those big, doe-like eyes at the older woman. It was both cute and a little sad how desperately she wanted to be loved, and it definitely left her a bit emotionally clingy.
Whereas, due to her ability, Theo had kept people at arms length. Even when she first arrived she'd fallen into old habits and started wearing her gloves again. She wasn't now though, and was quick to hook an arm around Dee's waist. "And what kind of tattoo would you get, hm?" She asked curiously. It was Dee's honesty, the way that she wore her heart on her sleeve, that made Theo less hesitant of letting her in. No one that sweet could be bad for her, she reasoned.
"I don't know... maybe something pretty like a butterfly or a bird..." Let's be honest: this was Deanna. There wasn't going to be a deep, thought-out reply here. "Just something that would be cute but sexy."
"Something colorful. I can picture that." Theo plopped down on the sofa and lightly tugged Dee down with her. Theo wasn't much of a morning person, but they were up now. "Any plans for the day?"
"I was thinking of going around looking for a new job." Dee told her, nuzzling against her affectionately. "It's not that I dislike being a receptionist... I just feel like I need something a little less samey." Yep. The woman said "samey" rather than "monotonous". "If worst comes to worst, I'm sure I could just go back to dancing or something. At least I made good money doing that."
Mmm. Okay. Being up so early wasn't so bad when Dee nuzzles were involved. Theo frowned thoughtfully. "The money shouldn't be an issue. It should be a job that you'd be happy doing."
"That's the thing..." Dee said, frowning. "I don't really like either right now. I mean, the money is decent, but it's so BORING. And then outta nowhere I'll have 30 calls coming in at once and it gets all overwhelming."
"Anyone would find it overwhelming in that situation." Still, Dee wasn't the type that took stress well. "Why don't you hand in your notice, hm? I'm sure you'll find something better."
"Well... I need to find something else first, but... yeah. I definitely need something else." Dee told her, being a bratty little thing and purposely writhing a little on her lap. "I mean, I know what I'm good at, but I can't see you wanting me having a career in that..."
Theo let out a small sound and set her hands on Dee's hips. "No," she agreed. "But... that's mostly because I'm selfish and want to keep you all to myself." A remarkably romantic thing of her to say, but she meant it. "But like I said... I want you to be happy in whatever you do."
"I like seeing this side of you." Dee told her with a dreamy grin, as usual just saying whatever's on her mind without really thinking of how it could sound. "You know. The side of you that feels like you wanna be mine and mine only."
"Do I not show you that often?" Theo asked with a frown. She'd been guarded for most of her life, but after everything that had happened that was understandable. She was trying. She was healing. Frankly she was much better at letting people in than she'd ever been before. She curled a lock of hair behind Dee's ear to better look at her.
"Does it make sense if I say you show it physically, but not verbally?" Dee asked her, pursing her lips in frustration with herself and her ability to convey things like this.
"Perfect sense," Theo assured her, gliding her fingertips along Dee's bare arm. She fell silent briefly. Deanna's innocence, honesty and all together goodness calmed her in a way that she'd never felt with anyone in her life. "I could talk more," she suggested.
"It's probably not really YOUR fault..." Deanna admitted, giving a guilty look far more adorable than she intended. "I get.... paranoid, I guess? I just haven't had very good luck in relationships, so... I tend to panic and worry I'm doing something wrong."
Theo wondered what kind of assholes Dee had dated before for thinking such a thing. "You're not doing anything wrong," she said softly as she started to kiss along Dee's cheek down to her neck. "Don't ever ever think that you are."
Dee had spent the majority of her life as basically an abuser-magnet, with only one or two people mixed in that were truly good to her. So it made things like trust and faith hard to come by. The list of people she truly trusted 100% was very short... maybe two people tops. "Kinda can't help it..." She said, stifling a sniffle, as the last thing she wanted to do right now was cry. "I'll try though... that I can do..."
"If you ever and I mean ever start thinking like that, come and talk to me. OK?" Theo asked, her tone both fierce and protective. She brushed her thumb over Dee's cheek in an effort to soothe her, getting a brief flash of Dee's life before Galador, of her being used and abused. Being made to feel very small, or like she didn't matter at all. "I won't treat you like the others did."
"I just worry that it'll end up like all the others. Everyone likes me until the novelty of my looks wears off and they realize how stupid I am." Dee admitted, looking away so as not to see Theo's eyes. "And you're a doctor. What could someone as smart as you even see in me other than my looks?"
Theo continued caressing Dee's cheek. Not long ago she would have shied away from physical contact, knowing that it could bring painful thoughts and memories to the forefront. She needed to see. She wouldn't shy away anymore.
"You're not stupid, Deanna. I'm sorry they made you feel that way. What Neely did, what Kayla did..." These were name's that they'd never spoken aloud. "Meredith."
"They made you feel very small." She paused, starting to feel herself getting emotional. "You are very sweet and kind and pure. You don't have a mean bone in your body, Deanna Kiske. What's not to love?"
By now, Dee knew enough about Theo's abilities that she wasn't surprised to hear what she'd seen. "Meredith never tried to make me feel like that... she's my best friend. Kayla was just selfish.... and Neely basically saw me for what I was back then: a cheap piece of ass."
Theo thought that it was very sweet of Deanna to stick up for her friend like that. Still. She wasn't a fan of Meredith's.
"It's sweet of you to try to rationalize their behavior like that. But really? They were a bunch of assholes who didn't realize they had a good woman when they had one." She gave her a light squeeze.
"Wow... I don't know if I've ever heard someone be all... super defensive of me like that." Dee said, blinking in a bit of surprise. She'd heard Meredith and a few others stick up for her... but somehow this felt different. "You really don't think I'm an idiot? I mean... even I can admit I'm kind of an airhead..."
"Not even for a second," Theo said softly, curling her arms around Dee comfortingly. "You're a good person, Dee. That's a very rare thing. You see someone in need and you want to help them." She pointed to the door which Ryan had just exited to prove her point. "You always find a bright side. It'll be raining and you'll always point out the rainbow. Or I'll have a headache and you'll say 'at least it's not a migraine'. I don't think you're stupid. I think you are a hopeful, helpful and positive person. And this world or any other would be lucky to have more people like you in it."
"You might have to tell me that again every so often..." Dee sighed, giving a sad little smile. "Getting me to believe that is gonna take some work."
"I've got all the time in the world," Theo replied, smooching Deanna's temple. She hated to see her so down on herself. "Hmm. How about we go out for breakfast?" She suggested. "We could go to that place that you like."
"You're so good to me..." Dee said with a wide, happy grin that just made her look like the most adorable creature that ever lived. "You have no idea how much I love - " she caught herself, and quickly made the save of a lifetime. "going to breakfast with you like that. Just me, you, good food, and alllll the coffee we can take."
"I love going to breakfast with you too," Theo murmured, giving Dee a quick and tender kiss on the lips. Given time she'd be more direct, but she was still learning to open herself up to love like that.
"Then let's go." Dee said, playfully biting Theo's bottom lip. "Because I've got an urge to get a stack of pancakes and ruin it's entire day."
