Max was exhausted. And in pain. His still-healing bullet wound was bothering him, and he had a tension headache to contend with after arriving on Galador and trying to absorb everything that came along with it. When Liz asked him to wait inside the convience store, Max decided he might as well use his small stipend to purchase some nail polish remover. He purchased two bottles, and placed one inside his jacket.
The other still in hand, Max moved out of sight of the cashier and twisted the top off. He swallowed a few gulps and immediately felt the acetone dull his pain. He took a deep breath and rolled his neck to try and relieve some of the tension.
A few minutes later, the chime above the doors sounded and Max turned to see Liz striding toward him looking determined. The anger in her expression cut him deeply, but it wasn't like he didn't deserve it. He took another deep breath to prepare himself.
When she admitted she was glad to see him, Max couldn't help the sliver of hope that flashed in him. He quickly did his best to quash it, however.
"Yes, you've made that extremely clear." He cleared his throat. "The part where you're still angry with me. I was surprised when you said you needed to see me."
