When she and Robin had married a year before it had been with the knowledge that no matter how much they loved one another there would never be a child that was just theirs. All because of a decision that she’d made in anger years and years ago. Instead they’d decided to continue giving a home to children who arrived without a parent in tow. And boy did they ever. Not a moment went by where the sound of laughter and hurried feet weren’t heard throughout the mansion. Occasionally followed by the slamming of a door. Or a yell that they could wait or go use another bathroom. And not a moment went by where she wasn’t opening her door or coming downstairs to find that some of the family’s honorary members had stopped by for a visit. Everything about the life Regina had built on Galador filled her with happiness. But no matter how happy she was there was still a longing to carry a child of her own. And thanks to their ever active reality gem she now knew that it was possible. Which is why a few months back she’d reached out to Juliet Burke to have a battery of tests run. Tests that eventually led to treatment that was for the most part a success. They’d cleared away as much scar tissue as they could and had to remove one ovary before determining that there was nothing more to be done medically. It was now time to turn to magic and thankfully she’d had friends looking into it for her. Nearly two months after they began her entire team of healers had exhausted every avenue of treatment. Juliet had informed her that she would always live with a mild form of endometriosis. It was a condition that Regina had known nothing about and quite possibly hadn’t existed in her universe. She had been assured that this condition wouldn’t prevent her from conceiving. Plenty of women who had this condition were able to conceive. It just might take time. And if it didn’t happen naturally there were always other methods that they could try. But first Juliet wanted her to recover from the procedures and see what happened. Regina had planned on going in for a checkup in early October but the month had not been kind on her family. And before she knew it Thanksgiving had come and gone and they were well into December. As the holidays and her anniversary were right around the corner she’d decided to postpone a checkup until the new year. A few more weeks couldn’t hurt, right? Well, boy was she wrong. A few mornings of waking ill could easily be passed off as a by product of a restless baby and very little sleep. But when the feeling persisted for an entire week, Regina, knew it couldn’t wait a second longer. Sure, it could just be she was coming down with a cold. A houseful of teenagers and small children could certainly do that to a person. But there was a small part of her that had hope that this was it. That this was the moment that she learned the twins were on their way. When Juliet revealed her results to her they both got a little bit emotional. Her curse was officially broken and though she had been skeptical, Snow was right. One should never give up hope. And when the ultrasound revealed to heartbeats the tears began to fall freely. The Locksley’s would grow by two more come next year. As she left the hospital that afternoon all Regina could think about was sharing her news with Robin. But the more she thought about it, the more she realized that this was the perfect gift to give him for their anniversary. Not to mention Christmas. And so, she waited. And waited. Until finally their anniversary arrived and thanks to their older children they had a night alone. With a little help from some of their friends, Regina, had left paper hearts for her husband to find. An idea that she had stolen from her niece. Each heart would lead him to another of their friends and closer to where she waited for him. A place that just a year before they’d vowed to love one another in sickness and in health. Robin hadn’t been certain what exactly his wife had in store for their anniversary, but knowing Regina as he did, he had been certain it would be something memorable. Of course he wasn’t disappointed either. He smiled and laughed, and greeted each of their friends with a jovial hello as he followed Regina’s trail. He collected her hearts, symbolic of the heart she had given him all that time ago. As he neared the final destination, Robin’s grin widened as he hurried to meet her. Of course it would be here that he would find her. Where else could it have been? “Regina,” he called to her, his face alight with love and admiration for the Queen of his life. Regina had never been a patient person. So, it was no wonder that she would take a glance at the time every few minutes or so. And just as she was about to glance at it again she heard her name being called out she smiled. The King of her heart was finally here. “Robin,” she responded and then laughed as the distance between them shrank. “You found me.” “I did.” His smile only grew as he reached her. “And I always will.” He pulled her in for a proper greeting, pressing his lips to hers. Regina smiled into the kiss and allowed her arms to slide up and loop around his neck. When the kiss ended she pulled back but kept her arms where they were. “We’re beginning to sound like my daughter and her charming husband but at this moment I don’t really care.” “Happy Anniversary, my darling.” Robin took a calloused thumb and brushed it gently against her cheek. “This has truly been the happiest year of my life.” “As it has been mine,” Regina replied and then - because she was unable to wait a moment longer - unlooped her arms from around his neck and took a step backward. And with a smile that was only reserved for him she willed her gift for him into one of her hands and then held it out to him. “But I have it on good authority that next year will be even better. Happy Anniversary, My King.” Robin accepted the card from her with a smile, but had trouble looking away from her face. Her excitement made her radiant and it took him a moment to pull his gaze from her absolute beauty. He still found himself amazed at how impossibly lucky he was to have her in his life. Finally, he pulled his eyes downward to read the printed words. It took him only a moment to piece them together and realize what Regina had brought him here to say. He looked up at her, eyes bright, “Regina.” After Robin had taken the card from her she waited as patiently as she could for him to finally know what she had desperately wanted to tell him for awhile now. And when he finally looked down and then back up at her a moment later the dam was released. Regina could no longer control how excited and happy she was. Especially not once she saw the same happiness reflected in her king’s eyes. “Surprise.” Robin was overwhelmed with emotion. He felt tears of happiness stinging at his eyes at the same time as the laughter escaped him. He couldn’t find the words to properly express himself, so he did the next best thing. Arms thrown open wide, he reached out and wrapped his queen tightly in an embrace. Her feet lifted clear off the ground, and he spun them both in a circle. Laughter. Pure genuine laughter. That’s the sound you would have heard if you were passing through the festively decorated park. Once her feet were back on the ground, Regina steadied herself and said a silent “thank you” to her sons for not making their presence known with a wave of nausea. She then took one of Robin’s hands and held it against her stomach. As soon as she pressed his hand against her stomach, Robin immediately stilled. It was a powerful feeling, standing there with Regina in the place where they’d been joined in marriage, this time joined with their sons. Robin was no stranger to magic and extraordinary situations, but he couldn’t help but be wonderfully overwhelmed by this moment. He wanted every second of it burned into his memory forever. “My boys.” His words were directed to her stomach where his thumb gently grazed itself over the fabric of her coat. “We’ve been waiting for you.” And his voice was laced with all the sincerity and love in his heart. But he was still Robin Hood, after all. And a spark of mischief lit up his eyes. “After all, the girls have us terribly outnumbered at the moment.” Regina once again laughed and then said, “and that’ll never change, my love.” He chuckled along with her and moved to wrap his arms firmly around her waist. His right hand made its way up to her face and brushed her hair behind her ear. He pressed his forehead against hers for a moment and just let the emotions of the moment course through him. After a moment, he looked into her eyes and murmured “I love you,” before pulling her in for a deep kiss. Instead of breaking the embrace that Robin had pulled her into, Regina responded by bringing her hands up to his shoulders and then letting her kiss convey just how much she returned the sentiment. A little while later - though far too soon for her liking - she ended their kiss and pulled back. But only far enough that she could gaze into his eyes. Her hands were still resting on his shoulders and his were still holding her waist. She might have even been content to continue doing that for hours but the weather had other ideas. The light flurries that had been slowly falling had given way to something much heavier. And Regina wasn’t prepared to test her magic against something that not even Elsa could control. “I think it might be best we head indoors,” Regina said breaking the silence. “Otherwise we might become snow people” Robin looked up for a moment and seemed to notice the snowfall for the first time since he’d arrived. Regina had a way of capturing his attention so he forgot what else was going on around him. He smiled and kissed her forehead. “As milady wishes. Shall we walk home? Or will you be taking us the short way back?” “Let’s walk home, my love,” Regina replied. “I find myself unwilling to share you with others just yet.” Another short laugh escaped him, and pressed a kiss to her temple. “I couldn’t agree more.” With that, Robin offered Regina his arm, and the two stayed close to one another as they made their way back home through the quietly falling snow. |
