Meeting the roommate
Who: Holly and Lauren
Where: Their Apartment
When: The day Holly arrives
What: Meeting the new roomie!
Rating: G-PG
"UGGGH. This was... really... a better idea.... in my head." Holly muttered to herself as she dragged the large duffle bag full of clothes and other personal belongings into what was to be her home for now. Sure, she'd appeared in Knowhere with only the clothes on her back and her iPod, but luckily she also had a good bit of cash on her.... and realized shortly upon arrival that wherever the hell she was, the cash she had was the same kind used here. SCORE!
So, she'd gone and blown pretty much everything she had on her, to get some clothes, personal effects, a few books to read, and, the thing that made the bag so damn heavy, a small television set.
Wiping the sweat from her brow, the little blonde dragged the bag to the corner, feeling much better now that she wore a new outfit. "Hello? Anyone here?" She called out, knowing from the pamphlet she'd gotten that she had a roommate (and really... a pamphlet? And from a DOG?).
Well, at least Lauren had been told to expect a new roommate, otherwise this would be awkward. She made her way out of the bathroom, dressed in tan pants and a white button-up shirt, toweling her hair dry from a recent shower. "Hi. You must be Holly." She said, setting her towel over a chair and making her way over to the younger woman. "I'm Lauren."
Offering a hand to the woman, Holly gave a crooked little grin, inwardly thankful that at least her roomie was attractive. Hey, if she was gonna be stuck here, it's at least nice to have good scenery, alright? "Nice to meet you. I'd have been here sooner but..." she motioned to the bag. "I really needed to get some stuff first. It's awkward enough with having to walk around in a black vinyl catsuit."
Lauren blinked. "...I'll bet." Now she was trying desperately not to picture the girl in THAT outfit, thanksabunch! Still, she shook Holly's hand politely. "Did you need a hand with that?" She asked, already moving to help Holly out.
"God, Selina's gonna be pissed when she realizes I'm gone..." Holly mumbled to herself before giving a grateful smile. "I'd love you forever. For a would-be superhero, I've got pathetically bad upper body strength."
Lauren helped her move her bag to the dining table. "Well, you couldn't have ended up in a better place. This place is full of superheroes, so Im sure they'd be happy to give you some pointers." She talked a lot when she was nervous. Shh.
"Oh god. I need WAY more than pointers. I mean... all I was, really, was an ex-hooker who lucked into having a hero as a best friend. She had a kid and couldn't do it anymore... so she started trying to train me. Note the emphasis on 'trying'." She laughed, having NO problem admitting her flaws.
Wow. That was more information than Lauren typically got on a first date! "Well, you know what they say about practice." She gave Holly a wry smile. "Can I get you something to drink?"
"Yep. Served me well in my FORMER profession..." Holly replied with a playful laugh. "And yeah, that'd be great. Maybe some juice or iced tea if you have any? Kinda stopped drinking alcohol when I started helping take care of kids."
"You take care of kids too?" Now wasn't this lady just full of layers! Lauren went about fixing them both a glass of juice. "It sounds like you've lived a full life already."
"You have NO idea. And yeah... I took a bunch of kids like me, that had... you know, nowhere to go. And instead of letting them be eaten alive out there, I give them stuff to do. Helping my friend and I out." Yes, Holly. As spies. Ah well. Still.
Lauren nodded and handed Holly her glass of juice before sipping at her own. "Suddenly my life seems so boring and ill spent," she joked, wrinkling her nose.
"Trust me. What I've been through? I'd trade for a boring life any day." Holly replied, gratefully accepting the glass. "So... this is really happening, huh? All of us are just... trapped here?"
"More or less," Lauren replied, bobbing her head. "At least until we get sent back home, or god knows where." Which had happened to her last roomie, sadly.
"You gotta get lonely, right? I mean, no family, no friends, no significant other.... it's just you and a bunch of strangers." Holly said, thinking to herself that that was a VERY scary thought.
"Well, I've got one friend from home, at least." Lauren paused and sipped at her drink. "And I did have my partner here for a little while." She couldn't help it but think that part of the reason that Holly was roomed with her WAS because she came across as lonely, though. She spent most of her time at the hospital and the only friend she'd really made was Cosima.
"I haven't had one of those in a lonnnnng time. A partner, I mean." Holly clarified with a chuckle. "Honestly? I think my years as a working girl showed me enough of the worst of people that it kind of soured me on things like love and sweetness, you know?"
"It's not so bad," Lauren murmured, moving to sit down. "I've learned to take the bitter with the sweet. ...But I can understand that it's not for everyone."
"I had just one girlfriend in the last few years. Karon. We were getting pretty serious, but... the word "partner" sounds so permanent, you know?" She asked, straightening out her skirt a little.
"I think that's the idea." Lauren couldn't help it but laugh. "I know that I was always hers, anyway." It didn't always go both ways, sadly. She didn't want to talk about Bo, though. "Do you have any idea what you'll do with yourself here?"
Holly felt an eyebrow go up when she heard Lauren say "hers". She had to giggle then, rolling her eyes. "This is sounding more and more like a bad sitcom. 'Two Lesbians, Two Worlds, One Wacky Adventure'..."
Lauren chuckled and ducked her head. "I almost made a joke about a talking dog, then remembered we actually have one here. How weird is that?"
"VERY weird. And this is coming from someone who's best friend is a thief in a cat costume." Holly answered, finding that her new roomie was actually quite nice. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad! "Someone in the marketplace was saying there's a trigger-happy raccoon here too? What the HELL?"
"He's adorable. And there's a... I'm going to say alien tree? I'm not quite sure of Groot's origins." She admitted. "And I thought the world that I came from was weird. I've actually just finished helping a vampire make synthetic blood, which is still just mind boggling."
"Good lord. Honest to god, I thought The Joker was strange, but he's damn near normal compared to this crap." Holly said with a hilariously stunned look. "How do you adjust to this, girl???"
"I think that it helped that my life was pretty strange to begin with." Lauren shrugged and couldn't help it but add jokingly: "Access to pharmaceuticals helps too."
"Yeah, I'm alllll set there." Holly said, forcing a laugh. She'd spent far too long getting herself clean to even consider ever going near anything like that again. "Not poo'ing on your choices, but... yeah. I can't do that. Like... ever again."
Ah. Good to see her foot in mouth syndrome was still in full effect. Lauren made a cute face. "That's a little dark Doctor humor there for you. I've been told I have to work on it. And by 'work on it' I mean 'stop'."
"No, it's ok... that's not who I am anymore. I don't live in fear of it." She said with a soft smile. "Besides, you're cute when you think you stepped in it." She laughed, deciding to lighten things a bit.
Lauren blushed and ducked her head again. "Which is a lot." It was adorable though. "...You really *have* lived a full life. I'm kind of in awe of you."
"And that's before you've even seen me in the Catwoman costume Selina had made for me..." She teased, getting a kick out of seeing the woman blushy. "So what do you do for fun around here?"
Annnnd there was that lovely mental image again. Lauren sadly had to think about her answer there. "...Work, mostly. I don't really get out much. A friend and I are in the middle of a chess game. And I am the single dullest person you've ever met. Sorry."
"Like I said: compared to what I've been through? Boring sounds like a nice change of pace." Holly said with a wry laugh. "Once you've faced Black Mask or Joker? Dull sounds like the best thing ever."
"I'll admit, some of the names you've mentioned sound oddly familiar." Lauren had vague recollections of seeing the late 80's Batman movies, so that totally counted. "What makes a person decide to be a superhero?" She mused.
"My best friend." Holly told her, without even thinking. "We were both... working girls. She got out of the game, became a hero called Catwoman. She got me out of the game, got me clean, set my life back on track. I never wanted to be a superhero... but when she had a baby, she had to step back. And she asked me to take her place. How could I refuse?"
"Wow... that's... wow." It seemed Lauren always seemed to be surrounded by amazing people and she was just... Lauren (okay, so her real name was Karen, but that's another story entirely!). She finished her glass of juice. "Well, I for one feel safer for having you here."
"Remember that when I end up flirting with you." Holly told her, smirking. "Because there's no way I'm gonna be able to live with a hot lesbian and not flirt up a STORM. You've been warned."
Lauren gaped for a few seconds. "...Somehow I think I'll survive," she replied, smirking as well. Oh, like it was the worst thing in the world!
