Meeting a Team Member (Sorta!)
Who: Clint and Stephanie
Where: Mar-Vell Memorial Park
When: Monday, June 8th - Before the War with Peter and Wade, clearly
What: Meeting an Alt!Steve
Rating: G
Since he could stand to get out more, Clint had decided to go for a walk. It seemed like a nice enough day (when wasn't there one, though?) and he wanted to be somewhere where he could think about home. Which was part of the reason why he was walking through the park. It reminded him of Central Park in New York of all places and he found comfort in the thought.
Stephanie, meanwhile, was more or less just walking through the park because it was the only part of this place that she felt familiar enough with to be comfortable in. At least she'd finally gotten herself some clothing other than the costume she appeared in. Now wearing demin cut-offs and a grey three-quarter length top, the leggy blonde super-soldier was quietly jogging through the park, trying to get her mind off of everything going on... until she saw a familiar face. She paused, taking a deep breath as she approached him. She knew he would likely not know her... she hadn't met one Avenger here who actually did... but it was still worth a shot, right? "Hey! Clint! Nice to see you..."
Clint was used to people recognizing him by this point, at least. He gave the blonde woman a puzzled yet friendly smile. "Well, you know my name... I don't believe I've had the pleasure, though."
"Yeah... kinda figured that." She said with a good natured laugh as she offered a hand to him. "Stephanie Rogers. In my world you and I were teammates and good friends." Ugh. No matter how many times she went through this here... it never got any easier.
"Stephanie," he repeated her name, even as he took hold of her hand and shook it. He couldn't help it but wonder about her origins. Was she a part of the super soldier program? Was there a male Peggy Carter floating around somewhere? "Well, hopefully we can be the same in this universe."
"Yeah... apparently all of you know a male version of me." She said, scrunching her face cutely as she said it... as though the very idea of her being a man gave her the heebie-jeebies. "Seems like everyone else I knew in my world is the same gender here... just me and Sam appear to be the exceptions." She went silent there, before deciding to see just HOW alike their worlds were. "So... what was the last thing that had happened to your Avengers before you were sent here? Where I'm from, Tony had tried to create some kind of... artificial intelligence. And it went really, REALLY badly. By the time it was over, Natasha and myself had more or less put together a brand new team."
"Um... well. Aliens invaded New York." Clint paused to let that sink in. "I never thought that I'd say that in my life. Then," he moved his mouth to one side, "turns out Hydra were secretly operating inside S.H.I.E.L.D. But I wasn't a part of that. Nat and Steve worked together on that one."
"The Chitauri..." Stephanie said in a low, clearly still-spooked voice. "And Hydra... that was such a mess. By the time it was over, The Avengers were almost a completely different team."
"I would do anything for them," Clint said after a pause. He gestured for them to keep walking. "Who did you have on your team?"
"Well, after the incident with Ultron, Tony quit, Thor went back to Asgard, Bruce got spooked and took off... " Stephanie explained, the admiration she had for her new team shining through as she spoke their names with pride. "Tasha and myself had to start from scratch. We got my friend Samantha Wilson, who we called Falcon, an android called Vision, Wanda Maximoff, Bucky Barnes, and a former SHIELD agent named Daisy Johnson."
"I'll admit only one or two names there ring a bell," Clint admitted with a wry smirk as they walked along, swinging his arms like a hyperactive teen.
"Yeah... even if things in your world turn out like in mine... you've still got a ways to go before you even meet some of those people. So... the big question:" She began, trying not to laugh as a smirk crossed her lips. "Is Loki as big a pain in the ass in your world as he is in mine? It's got me kind of spooked that they let him walk around here all willy-nilly."
That made Clint laugh. "He's a massive pain in the ass. Or he was. He's been pretty quiet... which I don't really take as a good sign. Then again, his brother's here so that might temper any evil impulses." He shrugged, not really believing that, but it was the best theory he had.
"Well, he IS quite smart. Smart enough to know that if The Hulk could kick his ass, that being stuck on a space station with not only him, but more heroes, gods, and other powerful beings than you could imagine is PROBABLY not a good time or place to cause trouble." The blonde said with a sweet laugh. "It's admittedly kind of nice up here. I worry about my friends, and I miss Daisy and Wanda... but overall it's not bad."
Clint nodded. "I miss people too... but... I try to make the most of it here." There was an obvious sadness there as he thought of home, but he tried not to dwell on it when in company. "So... how about we get some lunch and get to know each other a little better?"
"That sounds nice." Stephanie told him, inwardly thanking God that this version of Barton seemed as kind as the one she'd known back home. "Lead the way!"
