Mark Sloan had marriage on his mind, and it wasn't just because of Ellis and Arizona's engagement announcement. He'd been ready to settle down and be Lexie Grey's husband for a long, long time. But whenever he'd brought it up in the past, she'd seemed so resistant. The truth was, he'd wanted to propose to Lexie from the moment he'd arrived in this place and had found out what had happened to them at home. But he didn't want to push Lexie until she was ready. So he'd kept his thoughts about marriage to himself. But with another wedding happening so close to them, he wondered if maybe it was time to broach the subject again. So after his network conversation with Ellis, Mark went in search of his girlfriend. Lexie had loved Mark almost from the moment they met, in one way or another. And while a part of her dreamed of marrying him, a big part of her also feared that he'd never be able to curb his old ways entirely. The ease with which he could start flirting with any attractive woman he met filled her with worry. But 'Little Grey' wasn't thinking about any of that right now. She'd just finished a shift at the hospital, one somehow made MORE tiring by the fact that not much had happened. So, having showered and changed into a gorgeous black and gold mini-dress, Lexie was all smiles as she walked into the Crashdown looking to grab a quick dinner. Mark wasn't far behind Lexie in entering the diner. He'd managed to catch her on her cell and the two had arranged to meet for some food. As soon as he walked in and saw her, an ear to ear smile crossed his face. Even if she didn't want to marry him, Mark would consider him the luckiest guy around that she even wanted to be with him. "You look amazing." As he reached her, he leaned down to kiss her hello. "Why thank you, Dr. Sloan!" Lexie said with a playful, teasing tone. Adorably, her face still lit up like a Christmas tree any time Mark showed her affection like this. "So what's going on?" She asked him, leading him over to an empty table before gingerly sitting down. He grinned impishly as she called him Dr Sloan. "Thank you, Dr Grey." The diner was moderately filled, and maybe not the place he'd have chose for this conversation, but there were few things he would deny Lexie Grey. And if she wanted kitchy, alien-themed diner food, that's what she'd get. He sat down across from her. "Lex, you know I love you more than anything, right?" "Even more than making new women fawn over your every word?" Lexie asked, the impish grin on her face showing that she was only teasing. "Because...I seem to recall you loving that an AWFUL lot." He understood that she was only teasing him. But he also knew there as an element of hurt behind those words. His flirting had only the most innocent intentions (on his end, anyway) but they'd left a lot of upset in their wake. Lexie, Barbara, and even Sloan. He was a smart man, but even smart men could do extremely stupid things. Mark was definitely proof enough of that. He reached across the table and held her hand. Then he brought it to his lips for a kiss. "More than anything." He brought his other hand over to clasp hers. "Lexie Grey, I love you with every part of me. I wake up in the mornings and smile because you're the first thing I see. And I go to sleep happy every night that you're in my arms. I know I was an idiot, but there is no one else for me. Period. It's you, Lex." "When did you get so romantic?" Lexie asked him, clearly trying not to swoon. He'd had her heart on a string since the day they met, and deep down, she knew he was aware of that. That at his him, he could pull that string and yank her heart right out of her chest. So to see him trying so hard, even though he knew he didn't have to... it was a hell of a feeling. "So what brought all this on? I'm complaining..like, at all. But still. It's kinda out of nowhere." The expression on her face only made him hold more tightly to her hand. He and Lexie hadn't had an easy time of things throughout the course of their relationship, but if there was anything Mark was sure of, it was that she was the woman he wanted to spend forever with. "It's not entirely out of nowhere." He gave her one of his trademark smiles. "I've felt this way about you for a long time, Lex. And that's on me for not making sure you knew it every minute of our time together. Especially here." He glanced around at the diner. The thought of waiting crossed his mind. Dressing up, taking her to a fancy, romantic dinner. But then he looked back at her beautiful face and knew he didn't want to wait a second longer. It wouldn't be the place or the food or the clothes that would make this perfect. All he needed for that was her. Mark reached into his jacket pocket as he moved to stand up. The velvet box was there and had a considerable heft to it. He pulled it out of his pocket and knelt down next to her seat. "I want to make that up to you, starting now." He opened the box and presented her with a stunningly beautiful ring. "Lexie Grey, will you marry me?" "................oh my god." Lexie whispered, a hand coming up to her lips as her eyes widened. Was this real? Somehow, this was harder to believe than being alive and on another planet. "Mark, I.... I mean, of course I'll marry you... just... are you sure?" He still hadn't been entirely certain she'd say yes, so when she'd responded with that Oh my god his heart felt like it stopped for a moment. He braced himself for her to turn him down. Then she accepted and relief swept through him. "I've never been more sure of anything in my life," he answered her and slipped the ring on her finger. "Then I can say that I would love to be Mrs. Lexie Sloan." She told him, trying (and failing) to hide the excitement and joy she was feeling right now. "We should be careful though... make sure whatever we do isn't taking any attention from Arizona and Ellis." He slipped the box back into his pocket and stood up to pull her in for a long kiss. A few observant diners had been watching the scene and clapped in response. Though, Mark hardly noticed them. He had eyes only for Lexie. Love of his life. Fiancee. Soon to be wife. "We can elope tomorrow and tell everyone a year from now. All I care about is being with you and making you happy." "Let's do it." She said, before it could even hit her that he might've just been making a point. "Today, tomorrow, whenever you want." Was there a small part of her that wanted to do it before he could change his mind? Shhh. He'd been hugging her tightly as she answered, and her words caused him to draw back enough to look her in the eye. "Let's do it." And then he kissed her again. "I love you, Mark Sloan..." She said in such a tone that it was obvious: she was more in love with this man than she even knew was possible. "I love you too, Lexie Grey." He brushed his thumb gently across her cheek and kissed her again. "We are going to have such an amazing life together here. I promise." |
