Small chips of metal flew through the air as flame licked against the sheet that the RA was working on. The sound was something that couldn't be entirely classified in one neat and clean little box. It could be compared to a flickering flame of a campfire when pine was thrown in, a series of small pops, but that wasn't quite right. The next best comparison would be when the tip of metal was dragged against concrete, the low grinding noise that was produced, but that wasn't quite right either. A combination of burning and steel being dragged was the best way to describe it and even that was lacking really.
The long sleeve flame retardant protective jacket offered more warmth from the cold then she'd expected. Which was good since it wasn't safe to wear much while welding. With protective mask down she aimed the torch to touch down on metal, creating a green spark of light through the visor. It was the tint of the mask that caused the flame to change colors, but sometimes when using different types of welding tools the green color wasn't due to the mask but a chemical reaction between the flame, oxygen and metal components. Why couldn't humans be that simple? A series of specific actions and reactions that you could get the same result from every time? Chemistry. That was easy. Like the neutralization reaction as a double-displacement reaction when considering NaOH and HCl. Na+ set off OH- to create a balanced NaOH, and H+ combined with Cl- to balance as well. Yet when pushed together the H from NaOH would swap with Cl, which would then give you NaCl and HoH, or NaCl+H2O, or, in basic terms, salt water. See, simple. All the items worked together to make a definite out come with specific rules and guidelines. Clearly, she'd gotten an 'A' in chemistry. Unlike that psychology course she'd had to take this semester she was sure she'd gotten a 'D'. 'D's get degrees' a friend had commented to her jovially but that wasn't the kind of degree she wanted and it also wasn't the kind of degree her parents would be expecting of her. This was gonna cause a ruckus when she got back to her parents place. She didn't want to tell them, she didn't want to tell anyone really, but she had to. Had to tell her parents, had to tell Inanna, had to tell a couple other people too. Her job was in jeopardy because of this now, stupid minimum GPA requirement. She should have asked Keiko for help but it wasn't like they were best friends by any means and the other woman had enough to deal with all ready. Not being an 'A' student she couldn't afford to get an occasional 'D'. This was going to jack up her GPA badly. It'd put in risk her job and her helping out in other things. The other things were and weren't as big a deal as her job. Those were a matter of a battle ground she wasn't completely comfortable with. On one hand, she liked to help and make sure no one got hurt, on the other hand, it just reminded her more and more about her powers. Which made her stomach turn.
With the final curve rounded the new scale was finished being cut and eyes searched over it for a moment. Sighing a gloved hand reached up and slowly turned the fuel knob all the way off. Standing there for a moment the nozzle of the oxy-ace torch brushed against her pant leg as eyes turned towards the sky, face still protected by welding mask which hadn't been moved up yet. Something had caught her attention while welding, aside from her own frustration that was. A delicate six sided tiny white flake floated almost apathetically from the sky in it's crystalline glory to land on the eye protector of her mask. Eyes crossed as they both attempted to focus on the miniature glory of nature. It was true what they said, no one snow flake was like any other. As much as Ty bitched about the cold, in her own discreet manner, she loved snow flakes. Not snow as a whole, but each individual flake was this delicate miracle that in no way could fully be explained.
Eyes finally were able to make out the full design of this flake and the corners of her mouth twitched upwards. It was probably the first time she'd smiled since... It was hard to remember sometimes. You'd think if you didn't do something often each occurance would be more memorable, but it was hard to remember. She'd smiled gather flowers with the group due to some of Locke's jokes. She'd also smiled when she'd been on the roof with Liadan. Yet this was different somehow, more sincere, more heartfelt in a sense. With Locke's jokes there was always that sense of duty backing where they were and with Liadan there was an unease due to the circumstance of sharing her sculpting with Liadan. At this point she had begrudgingly admitted to her self that she actually could stand and... maybe even liked a few of the new kids. Maybe even wouldn't mind getting to know a few of them better or becoming friends with them. Locke and Liadan stuck at the top of the list, after that the number of people she had any remote interest in dwindled quickly.
The first snow flake to fall on her protective mask had melted a long time ago now and a new one appeared. Eyes slowly moved to examine it when a notion struck her. Had she always been an onlooker on the world? Keeping her self removed from everything... everyone with a protective layer shielding her from it? Some little part of her knew she had. That she had made friends with all the normal kids on purpose while growing up, so that she could hide that she was different, her parents had told her to, so she had. Her parents had told her to keep it a all a secret, so she had. Then her parents had told her to go to the school for powered kids, so she had. There were little rebellions against them, her tattoo's, the couple piercings, the motorcycle which she no longer rode. How her parents loved to not see that motorcycle. She'd heard them talking over the break, about how maybe she was settling down, finally growing up enough to remove her self from all of these rebellious things and become a real professional. She frowned. "Because a real professional can't have piercings or tattoo's." She muttered with disdain under her breath as another snow flake stuck to the protective helm.
Pausing for a moment a deep seated realization sunk in. Something that words couldn't properly express. A feeling, an emotion, of both deep sadness and extreme joy. Her heart ached for a moment. All these years, had she been living someone else's life? Ty had always done exactly what her parents told her, even something in the rebellion of body art almost seemed fake in that instance. Another momentary pause was taken before slowly, almost as if doing so would cause the entire world to unravel she began to remove the protective gear, piece by piece. A glove fell to the ground, then the other, the jacket unzipped and shrugged off before finally looking down at the pile of items on the rooftop, the mask was discarded into the pile. The urge to pick them up, straighten them out and put them away in a neat, precise and orderly manner struck her like a sharp blow but a slowly sucked in breath of the cold december air helped her to resist the urge. Watching for a second her brain tried to wrap around what this was. Was this a revelation? Was this one of those supposed life altering moments she heard about?
Did it matter?
Another slow inhale was sucked in and with a hard swallow her face turned towards the sky, taking in the sight of the slowly falling snow flakes.
With this new snow, was there perhaps a new beginning? A new life where maybe... just maybe she could find herself in, one where she could be truly happy?
Only time would tell. Hesitating for a moment a hand fell to her pocket and her jaw tightened. Glancing down at the discarded welding materials for a moment she bent down, scooping them up in a hurray and disposing of them in the storage container she kept before yanking out her cell phone while making her way for the stairs. Texting a single thought floated through her head. 'If it is, let's start this off right.' The roof door closed behind her with a thud, leaving the darkened sky and slowly descending frozen water droplets to resume the peace of the natural order that they had somehow instilled in the struggling mutant.
