Trying to find the Silence
Who: Mags and Open
What: Solitary Meditation
Where: An empty room in the Mutant Resource Center
When: Sunday November 12th,
Rating: G
Status: Incomplete
It took a while of skulking around campus with a strange lump in the freshman's purse before a quiet place could be found. Mags' dorm room was not ideal for trying to do anything undisturbed. While the showers were generally a comfortable escape with a bit of privacy they weren't exactly conducive to candle use. A quick look around was enough confirmation for the southern belle that she had found a quiet place, physically anyway.
Finding quiet in the world was far simpler than silence within. Greater control over the young woman's powers as well as herself was necessary if the auburn haired girl was to ever be of any use to those around her. Within a moment the candle that Liadan had so generously given was set up near eye level once nimble legs folded beneath the timid beauty. A drop of the special oil was carefully placed on the wick. Carefully replacing the vial a lighter was retrieved. Stomach tightening the final step of preparation was taken as the candle sparked to life. A slow exhale pushed the tension away.
Soft floral scents teased the air bringing a deep calm with them. Hazel eyes fastened to the flickering flame only the barest of breaths shifting the petite torso of an otherwise still frame. One by one each external sense was shut off, all save the sight focused on that one point of concentration. Focus was the most important thing. Purpose was questioned to bring forth the motivation for such an alien practice. Why was Mags doing this? That was a simple answer, her friends and classmates. At first the only reason to come to this school was like Liadan had said, to learn to control her abilities so that living a normal life would become possible again. But the more time the sweet girl spent here the more her eyes were ripped open to the hidden realities of the world. There really were things that went bump in the night. They weren't ancient legends to explain unknown animals or a fairy tale to frighten children into brushing their teeth and doing their chores. Real monsters existed in this world. And with them came very real danger, a danger that seemed indelibly drawn to friends and classmates.
Worthy or not the ingenue had been chosen for this and people depended on her. As much as these strange things terrified Myst more frightening still was the idea of losing anyone to them. Horrible things had already happened to all them. Luckily the groups Mags had been in had recovered far better than that Marilyn girl. But what if it was just luck? The next time, if there was one, there were no guarantees that something truly tragic wouldn't happen. Echoes of screams, her own and others, floated through a troubled mind like a phantom nightmare in slow motion. Other cries mingled in the chorus of misery in familiar voices-Blaze, Liadan, poor, sweet Emma. Kind faces mottled into mirrors of the distorted faces of death from that creepy camp- Inanna,Takahashi, even Touya.
Pitching forward silent sobs shook a slender form. With no other competition for the girl's attention every fear and horror that haunted the back of her mind sprang forward in sadistic glee. Then a rather odd thought blossomed to life. Mags had wanted to bring forth her motivation and this was it, every reason she was here doing this. It was everything that must be avoided at all costs. If this could help in anyway, if it could save even one life-even Touya's- every minute was worth it. With a deep inhale strength of conviction straightened the slight girl's spine. A hardness overcame normally tender hazel orbs. One by one each distraction was stripped away. Even the warm stickiness of salt trails clinging to apple cheeks went unnoticed as a stillness crept over the auburn haired girl.
