Kevin nodded to Dan and swept his hand toward Sandra to confirm the order. "He might have homeless buddies for all we know, but that doesn't do anything for me concerning the lack of history on this guy. The killer either knew something about him that we couldn't via a nice stalking session around this part of town." He paused to take a breath. "Or! He was imposing a fantasy on him for which there was no grounds."
Kevin turned to take in the scene again. "The latter doesn't seem as likely. This guy is nuttier than a fruitcake, but if I've said it once... He's meticulous. This was carefully planned. I mean, look at that contraption over there. You don't just shrug and come up with that on a weekend off, man. That takes some semblance of ingenuity and time."
He caught Dan's tired gaze and sighed. Despite being younger than Coleman, he was more conditioned for this work by several, weathered miles. "It's messy," he said. "Little trick one of my mentors taught me: pretend it's paint. Sometimes that works." It hadn't for Kevin, but he didn't say this. "You wanna get some coffee?" He didn't seem to be offering it up for debate as he stepped past Dan and waved for him to follow. "Come on. Coffee and a breather."
