Voter Registration Inquiry
This is crossposted from the Obama LJ community because I really need all the opinion I can get. I'm kinda panicking.
See, I'm a naturalized citizen. I had an oathtaking 2 weeks ago on September 26th. I filled out my voter registration form and headed to the people collecting them literally the second I got out of the auditorium. Note that these weren't Obama or McCain volunteers. They were personnels hired by USCIS themselves, and they were inside the building. The thing, however, is that we (my mom and I) gave our registration forms to someone not sitting on the long table. The guy looked nice enough, was standing CLOSE to the table and he informed us how to get to a place we were looking for (the passport area), so we assumed that he was one of the official people working there, and it was safe to give the forms to him. So we did, the guy took the forms without hesitation (another reason why we were sure he was a volunteer there) and off we went to the passport area. Now though, I'm really thinking back on it.
It's been 2 weeks and my mom and I still haven't received our registration cards. I've tried to contact our Secretary of State to check my voter status but I've been put on hold for probably 45 minutes ( A LOT of people calling, I think) and I just gave up at the end. Now I still don't know if we're already registered, or if we'll be able to vote absentee or even on November 4.
Is 2 weeks of waiting normal? Am I just being paranoid?
Because lately, I've considered registering again, either online or by going to one of the registering events here, but I was afraid that my original form might have already been received by the time I register again, and isn't that voter fraud? However, if I just do nothing, then I might not be able to vote at all.
I suppose you could say that I'm in a safe state. I'm in California, but I REALLY want to vote, I want my first time voting to be for Barack Obama, and I want to help oppose Prop 8, dammit.
You could say that it's still not too late yet, because I just got an e-mail from one of the precinct captains in my area informing me that there's gonna be a registration event tomorrow just a few miles away. But if they register those people tomorrow, and it'll take 2 weeks (or more) for them to be officially registered, then would that mean they can't vote absentee? Our deadline is on the 28th, after all.
ARRRGHHH!!! Any advice would be appreciated, please! :)
