Steve wasn't avoiding. Not really. He'd just been busy. Things needed to be done, he couldn't just drop everything the moment Caroline had told him Natasha had shown up. The fence needed to be checked, weapons taken stock of, the vehicles looked over for their supply run coming up. It wasn't avoiding. Except that it completely was. There was a war of sorts that waged in Steve as he continued the avoidance - ammunition needed to be perfectly organized, right. He wanted to see her (needed some part of his mind supplied), he had missed her in some way he didn't even know how to begin to define and come to terms with. Even now, after three years, he still found himself looking for her beside him - in the middle of a fight, when he needed advice, when he needed his partner. Natasha knew him, better than anyone really. She would take one look at him and know just how hard the past three years had been. She'd see every minute of it etched onto his face and he wasn't sure if he was ready to handle that. Caroline and Joey only knew him the way he was, Tony and Pepper he could fake well enough around - but Natasha? There would never been any fooling Natasha and he knew that. However Natasha was not one who would be avoided - which he more than knew. So when he felt the stare of someone behind him as he checked a box of ammo he knew instantly it was her. Probably shooting death glares into his back as he set the box back on the shelf. He turned to look at her. She was exactly as he remembered - and it hit him harder than he thought it would. What did you say to someone you hadn't talked to in three years but had never left your thoughts. He'd thought of this countless times, he'd thought of what to say so many times, but it was all gone the instant he saw her. "Hi." Speeches to rally the troops he could give in spades. But form more than one word to the woman he hadn't seen in three years, yeah that one wasn't happening. |
