Sophie's nose wrinkled when the spine in her Advanced Structure text book cracked as she flipped to chapter twenty-two. The sound echoed in the library and she glaced around to see if anyone noticed before thumbing to the right page, wiping her thumb over a picture of a 19th century corset dress.
"Look," she whispered at Clark, turning the book around so he could see the picture. "That was made with actual whale bone."
Clark glanced down at the text book, his eyes scrunching up slightly as he studied the page. She appreciated the effort he made in actually looking like he was interested, nodding slowly and leaning forward to look closer before glancing up at her, his mouth opening to reply.
Instead of hearing what he had to say, a tidal wave of nausea hit her, followed by the feeling of her midsection being yanked back. Sophie closed her eyes tightly and lurched forward for a split second before her feet landed solidly on the ground, momentum sending her falling to the pavement suddenly found under her.
