Tachikoma and Eliot Spencer
Baby: Eliot/Tach AU-UTR-verse
Eliot hated that the hospital made him use a wheelchair. He may have a leg in a cast, but he could still walk. It was a liability issue, a nurse had explained. They couldn't have him falling down while he was still in the hospital. Tach was behind him, carrying the crutches he would use once he got outside. He wasn't thrilled about those either, but they were better than the wheelchair.
As he wheeled himself up to the counter to finish the paperwork, he stopped grumbling long enough to realize his girls weren't with him. There was a brief moment of panic, as if they were on a con and the girls had been found out and were in trouble. But no. They were just in a hospital. He spun himself around, spotting the girls down the hallway a bit. Growling a little at the nurse behind the too-tall counter, he snatched the clipboard from her and started back down the hall to Tach and Riley.
Riley stood on her tiptoes, pointing at the glass. "Aww, look at that one," she cooed. "They’re so cute!"
Tach giggled and nodded. "Look, he looks like he's thinking really hard, 'Elementary, my dear Watson,'" she said, giving the babies different voices and accents. She leaned the crutches against the wall and lifted Riley up so she could see one of the babies in the back row. "Pip pip cheerio."
Eliot raised a brow as he wheeled up to the two. Babies. "Hey," he said, his tone a little cautious. Tach was what some might call a 'Free thinker’, and Eliot often couldn't guess the things that might come out of her mouth. He loved that about her, but he was also a little unsure of what she might say around his brand new daughter. "What are you girls up to?"
"We're looking at the babies!" Riley announced, pointing at them. It was good to see her showing more exuberance than she had the night before. A seven-year-old being as quiet and withdrawn as Riley had at first was worrying, mainly because Eliot feared someone had made her that way. Now she seemed much more excited and normal. Probably a side effect of being around Tach. "Tach was telling me stories about them!" Riley said.
Eliot wheeled closer, glancing at the nursery. It was strange... He'd never expected to have kids-never really had any desire, not after what he'd been through. But here was Riley. He'd known her less than twenty four hours and he already loved her. Looking at the babies made him wonder what he'd missed out on. What would he have done if he'd known about Riley from the beginning? He would like to think he’d have dropped everything and been the perfect dad, but he wasn't a good guy back then. He'd been a selfish jerk who was only in it for himself. What if he could start over?
Then he felt the girl's small arms wrap around his shoulders in a hug. He was down on her level now--that was one good thing about the wheelchair. He smiled, ignoring the slight twinges of pain and stroking her hair lightly. "Hey." He glanced over at Tach, wondering what she was thinking as she looked at the babies. Did she want to have one, someday? They hadn't talked about it, and Eliot wasn't sure what to say if they did. He hadn't even considered it before Riley. Now, though... the idea had some appeal.
"Can we go see the horses now?" Riley asked, eager to get back to Tach's house.
Eliot smiled, ruffling the seven (and a half) year old's hair. "Yeah.. I think we can do that. Ready, baby?" he called to Tach.
Tach blinked, looking around. she tilted her head, confused. "I don't think they can hear you from behind that glass."
"I think he meant you," Riley told her, trying not to giggle.
Tach grinned, and it wasn't quite clear if she had been joking or not. Sometimes it was hard to tell, with her. "Oh! Okay." she grabbed the crutches and started following them out.
Maybe someday.
