Things were... tense, to say the least, and they couldn't be blamed for that. They still had eyes on Korea and Vietnam lingered at the back of their minds. Now there were launch pads sprouting up on Cuban soil and launch codes sitting in presidential offices; the politicians were up in arms and words were sailing between Congress and the Kremlin, words that went by completely ignored while the writers scribbled away furiously trying to win a dead man's game.
He is introduced to the table as Lieutenant General Jack Forrester. Air Force pilot with medals to his name, gave up flying because of his 'deteriorating eyesight', wound up behind a desk that led him to this seat at this table in this room in the Pentagon.
Coincidence? Perhaps not. The story is ridiculous, the story is useless - they all had fabricated stories to match their fabricated names so that they could all be here, talking about the imminent disaster less in the capacity of their fabricated roles and more as overseers of destruction.
