Belvoir Blues
Who: Uncle Sam & US Military
What: Attention all personnel, this is not a test. This is a real murder.
Where: Fort Belvoir, Virginia
When: July 4, 1998
Warnings: Probably none needed, except for the prerequisite dead body.
They found the body on the training ground, laid out as if it was waiting for a rookie practice run. Except this was no practice run. And the body was one of their own - a Private Daniel Tyrol, based right here at Belvoir. The Coroner had pronounced COD to be blunt force trauma with a sharp object to the back of the head. And of course, Sam would be the CID officer assigned to head up the investigation.
Narrowing down a list of potential suspects could take months - especially on a base as busy as Fort Belvoir. But the dead man was in his dress uniform - probably about to join the Fourth of July celebrations in town. This made their job slightly easier, as they were able to focus in on the private's platoon.
Which still left Sam and his deputy Major Paul Tapping with a dozen or so men kicking their heels outside his office, probably more than a little hung over from the ongoing celebrations. But it was a start. And they'd already made some headway into the investigation so far.
Leaning back in his chair, Sam nodded to the Major. "Send in the next one, Paul," he said, shuffling through the personnel files on his desk, as Major Tapping went to open the door.
"Private Cross."
