Maybe I didn't treat you quite as good as I should have

Weeks had passed since the strange parking lot incident. After seeing Loki off and letting Heimdall cool down the All Father had put the event out of his mind. There was work to be done after all. Things were coming along, slowly but surely. Sif had been very understanding when he and the watchman had missed the initial set of appointments.

Odin had taken the hint and had been early for every meeting after that. They would have their niche in this new world. They would carve out something of their own on this strange land.

Their future would be in repossession or freight. It didn't matter which. His wolves reappearing had been the sign he needed. They were on the right track even if it did seem odd and so...normal.

If you couldn't have worship then a business was the next best thing.

Today he found himself with a bit of free time. Had moment to dwell on things that hadn't been resolved.

Which is why he was knocking on Loki's door with a red muppet tucked under one arm.

Why yes he was feeling better now, thank you for asking. It was an awkward conversation he had to have with Sigyn, which ended up with a bit of a soft reprimand from her and a sheepish grin from him. But he had been discharged for about a week - doctors were amazed at how the shattered bones reformed themselves as if Loki was some walking, living, breathing Messiah (is that right sir? You flatter me; you really do) and he was very convincing in letting them know that they had no reason to keep him under observation (aren't there other patients waiting to use this bed?)

So here he was. Under home observation, apparently - Sigyn was floating in and out even though the bandages had come off and his arms were fully functional again. Wasn't sure when she'd be back but she didn't knock, so that was the first sign that something was amiss.

When he opened the door, he wasn't sure what surprised him more. The fact that Odin was here, at his doorstep (how did he find him?), or the fact that Odin was holding a-

"...what is that?"

"This." Odin held up the big eyed soft plush (he should have put a bow on it's head, pink even) a moment and then shoved it into Loki's chest.
"Is for you." Volume going up a notch so he could be heard over the ELMO LOVES HUGS the thing squealed once it had been squished.

Shouldering past Loki, why wait for an invitation, he stepped inside.

"A get well gift, if you will. Feeling better, sunshine?" He sounded more genuine then polite, then again he always did. Odin always appeared and sounded as he was supposed to. Wearing a lifetime of disguises made it damn near impossible to be yourself.

"I'm already fully recovered; thanks for your concern," he said, still standing in the doorway as Odin invited himself in, looking down at the red hairy Elmo thing. What was it supposed to be? More importantly, what did Odin expect Loki to do with it? Use it to wipe the windows?

The place was tidier than usual. Loki wasn't exactly the tidy sort, so it should have been quite obvious that Sigyn had been around.

"Arguments with your mistress all sorted now?" he asked, turning, cocked eyebrow and mischievous smile in place. Same old, same old; a light tease here, a punch in the guts there.

Parking lot. Cliché.

Things were always cleaner with a woman around. More organized too. Which is why Odin was secretly (re: transparently so) happy to have Sif around. Without her he wouldn't have made as much progress in the business side of things. He'd be caught in a never ending circle of arguing with Heimdall and Thor without a mediator.

He didn't think of his own wife too often. Wherever Frigg may be, and it bothered him that he did not know, he hoped she was well.

Shrugging out of his jacket he laid it across the back of a chair.

"Took him out for ice cream after we dropped you off at the hospital. My therapist says parking lots are no place for confrontation."

"I think your therapist has a point there." Parking lots were where drug dealers went to sell inhalants, where gangsters and loan sharks went to beat up desperate people and generally, well, one should endeavour to keep the dirty laundry indoors.

His gaze lingered on the jacket before flickering back up to Odin.

"Of course. Make yourself at home. You look like you're staying." Dry humour. Not intended to be funny, clearly, but that didn't mean you couldn't laugh at it either.

"I suggest you leave before the missus returns, if it's not too much to ask."

"Don't worry, darling, I'm not here to cause any domestic disputes." Not intentionally anyway. He knew full well the issues his presence would cause if Sigyn appeared in the doorway. Did he care? Not really. Part of him was even pleased with the thought.

He grinned as sprawled on the couch. He didn't own the place and his actions suggested more casual familiarity then superiority. They were old men despite the faces they wore and they had been doing this for a very long time.

"Aren't you going to have a seat?"

"Is that right," he asked without asking. Loki was good at asking without asking - did it all the time, but perhaps it was a Norse thing in general; them and their eternal feuds, disagreements. Not as bad as some of the others, no doubt, but it was no secret that Odin wasn't a fan of him. And the feeling was more or less mutual.

"Would you like a drink first? Or shall I sit first so you can make me get up again?"

"No need. I won't be staying for very long. Sit. Rest your previously broken bones."

He could have just as easily left. The gift had been delivered and the Trickster was healed - there wasn't any reason to stay. And maybe that's why he did. He'd sit here and try and make something of it. Old habits died hard. Old wounds never healed and Odin wasn't better then anyone else. He licked picking at scabs as much as the next person.

He tossed the red hairy rag onto what spare space was left on the couch that Odin wasn't busy soiling. That horrible 'ELMO LOVES HUGS!' sound came out from the toy again, and if Loki was going to say something in response, he temporarily forgot about it.

He couldn't recall a time he got along with Odin. It was always with Thor. He talked with Thor, Thor responded without too much antagonism (wasn't Thor rather antagonistic towards everyone though? He certainly wasn't any more antagonistic towards Loki than the next Norse who decided to bother him) but even before that incident with Baldr, Odin and Loki were never anything more than two names in the same big story.

So there was no real need for them to be cordial now. But if anyone knew anything about rubbing salt in the wound, these two have been playing that game for centuries.

Loki pulled up a chair and sat, just out of reach from Odin and the couch he had claimed. When the ruler of Asgard told you to sit, you could tell him to fuck off, or you could be smart about picking your battles and listen to the Almighty One.

"And to what, exactly, do I owe such kind treatment?"

"I wanted to see how you were doing."

There was some truth to the answer. A half truth at the very least the kind Odin had always excelled in. Most of it had to do with the thoughts he never said out loud. The things that were lost to everyone including him. The truth was, the real truth and not some hidden thinly concealed barely plausible reasoning was that the All Father found comfort in the antagonistic nature of their relationship. For every trick, every twist of the knife Loki had so happily given Odin had responded in kind.

The side-stepping, the dance, the bloodshed it kept him interested. Kept him moving in a story that they all already knew the end to.

If he was amused with Loki keeping out of arm's reach it didn't show. There was an air of casual indifference around Odin. The strangeness of the incident that had put he, Loki and Heimdall in his therapist's parking lot had not escaped him. But it really hadn't mattered either. It was another show, another rub that further proved their were bigger forces at work here.

And that had set Odin on entirely different course of action.

"I'm going to burn down the Yggdrasil."

"Oh," was all Loki said, and he didn't look, didn't sound, didn't at all seem surprised.

"I'll make sure to disable the fire alarms." Now that his limbs were fully functional, might as well put them to use before he snapped them in eight different places again.

If Odin wanted a serious response from Loki, he wasn't going to get one, because it was just silence that filled the space between them. It wasn't an eerie silence but it could certainly be construed as uncomfortable, almost antagonistic, taunting for either side to fill that void with words of some gravity that really didn't mean anything anymore in this day and age.

There were elements of their old world that Loki was attached to, but now wasn't the time to get sentimental. Not in front of Odin, of all people. He'd already seen him at his weakest, broken him down further than that - there was nothing else he had left of himself to protect, so why give everything away?

"You couldn't have told me that over the phone?"

"No." He reached over, held the stuffed Elmo up by the scruff of the neck. "I wouldn't have been able to give you this." He sat the muppet in a proper sitting position. He did it without thinking, this small meaningless gesture that did nothing could do nothing to fill the too full space between them.

"And I thought you should know what I am going to do." Not out of the goodness of his heart of course. He did this on occasion. Said things out loud that nobody wanted to hear.

He'd burn down the tree. If he found the Norns there he'd burn them too.

Loki didn't place as much significance or importance in the red hairy piece of rag that Odin seemed a little fond of. Did it hold some special meaning that he was missing out on?

He hadn't considered that there was a manifestation of the Yggdrasil here. It was... a tree. Trees didn't move. But it was a tree that had become a symbol of their world, just as gods had become symbols of the people. Gods shouldn't move either, but if all they were supposed to be were just symbols, then why shouldn't the tree have moved with them?

"You can't change Ragnarok. It's not your story, not your decision to make. Tree or no tree it will happen."
