It was the first day of winter, the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice. Raphael found himself drifting through the city after his shift at the hospital was taken over by another physician. It was a beautiful night. Or perhaps it should be called the morning. The sun wouldn't be up for another few hours, but that gave him plenty of time to get to where he wanted to go.
Raphael walked down a number of blocks before a taxi pulled over and offered him a ride. He could sense the driver needed the patronage. The man should have been home with his family, but they needed the money, especially with the holidays so close. The taxi cab driver wanted to buy his daughter a bicycle this year. His desperation and hopes and prayers reached to Raphael as he slid into the passenger's seat.
The archangel told the driver he wanted to see the sunrise. The fluorescent light bulbs in the hospital could only do so much. He needed to feel His warmth. The driver told him he knew the perfect place. Rockaway Beach. It's where he took his daughter sometimes, when he had the time. Raphael nodded, and had a pleasant chat with the man until they reached his destination.
Raphael paid for the fare, tipped the man very generously, and started down the boardwalk, hands tucked into his pockets. The salty sea air whipped against his face, but he was otherwise warm and snug in his coat. With no one within sight, it was tempting to let his wings spread and stretch. Raphael entertained the idea, but shook his head at the thought. It was never good to give into temptation.
