Who: Lust, Jack Monte (NPC) and Nybras (NPC)
When: Friday, September 24th (Backdated)
What: Tying up loose ends
Where: The former enterprises of one Mr. Ace Moore
Warnings: Language, threats of violence
The phone call from Nybras had been one unexpected, and Lust purposefully set it aside to stew over for a day or two rather than leaping in irrationally as she was more often wont to do. That Friday afternoon, however, she was perched behind that royal throne of a desk that her darling brother had adored so, fingernails tapping impatiently atop the polished wood. Her eyes narrowed with the briefest flicker of Hell as her minion nudged open the doors to admit the foundling.
The whole purpose in Greed’s last venture was to go out to drag the wretch back from some debacle months before, that his mortal flunkie was here now and he wasn’t, it took a great deal of self control to not reach across the desk and rip his throat out with her bare hands.
“You’ve got a lot of nerve showing your face around here, Monte. Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t kill you where you stand.”
With the self assurance of one who had survived many similar threats before, the mortal man seated himself across from the Sin, secure in the knowledge that he had, and orders left to carry out.
“Because you wouldn’t want to do anything rash before you’ve heard what I was sent here to say, of course. Though I would say that you’re still as lovely as always, Ms. Vale.”
“Save your patronizing for someone less likely to throw you out the window. Hurry up and say what you have to say so we can get to the part where you’re walking back out of my office -- unless you’d rather leave by my route, which I do hope is the case.”
Flashing an uneasy grin of shiny white teeth, Jack eased back into the leather chair, settling a briefcase on his lap.
“Being that our old friend Ace obviously hasn’t made an appearance as yet, when we last parted ways, he sent me back with some very specific instructions.” The briefcase snapped open with a pair of sharp clicks that echoed through the vaulted ceiling, the mortal man taking his time in rifling though sheaves of papers. “In the event that anything happened to Mr. Moore, all of his holdings pass to you -- as apparently you are already aware of his wishes, seeing that you’ve already commandeered his office.” Another knowing sneer, answered only by a narrowing of the Sin’s eyes and the silent lift of an elegant eyebrow in warning.
“Really, from the look of things, it would seem as though his last request of me was a wasted effort. A few phone calls to a couple of my associates told me more than your assistant here, since you were otherwise preoccupied and couldn’t find time in your no doubt busy schedule to go over things when I first arrived in the city. But again, it would seem that you and Mr. Moore were of a single mind. Such a whirlwind romance, it’s all the talk of the staff. But they’ve heard of far more scandalous things considering their former employer.”
Manicured fingernails curled into her palms, a silent mantra repeating itself through Lust’s mind about how much of a hassle it would be to clean the stains out of the carpeting, and how annoying it would be for yet another tragedy to take place so soon after losing the company’s founder. It just wouldn’t bode well for morale.
She accepted the paperwork that passed from the mortal to her minion before it was handed off to her, noting the similarities to that of what she had already set Nybras to arranging since she first felt the severed connection between she and Greed. Contracts between Ace Moore and Parthena Vale, page after page of legalese. They had only actually spoken a brief moment or two on what should take place if such a situation should ever arise, but never finessed it out as they had barely been separated from the moment they left New Orleans together months ago. It eased a little of the heartache to find that they were still on the same thread of thought, even now that the unthinkable had happened. The last contract on the bottom of the pile was nearly enough to make her crack a smile, but Lust held herself in check as she ran the tip of her finger over the signature on the marriage license that matched the one she had filed away. A final seal that would ease over any arguments between the mortal board of directors and anyone else who would question the rushed passing of the mantle of CEO from one to another -- and an ‘elopement’ was just as valid as some lengthy and unnecessary courtship.
The things she did to see that things were handled properly.
“Was there anything else? Or is this all that you have that I had to rearrange my schedule for?” With nothing new or noteworthy, Lust was ready to go back about her busy days of harassing and haranguing her sister along with wherever her wishes took them.
“Not really anything too important. Just a couple more things and I think we can conclude this meeting.” This time it wasn’t a thick stack of papers and forms, only a simple envelope and a small black velvet jewelers box. Rather than passing it off to the demon hovering nearby, Jack rose from his seat to put the two items directly in Lust’s hands. “He made it implicitly clear that these were to be given to you and only you.”
For a moment, Lust didn’t speak, only stared down at the thick paper of the envelope with her name in Greed’s familiar scrawl.
“You may go now. Tomorrow you will return to your former position, but you’ll be working under my man Daniel here. He answers directly to me, and his orders are as good as if they were coming from me personally. You would do well to remember that I don’t share Ace’s tolerance of you, Monte. That is all the warning you will get. You know your way out.” Dismissing the mortal with an airy wave of her hand, Lust set the envelope aside to be read in private later.
“Of course, Mrs. Moore. My felicitations and my sympathies to you. If there is anything you might need, you’ve only to ask. Mr. Moore left very clear instructions, as I’ve said. It will be my supreme pleasure to serve.”
Lust didn’t hear a word of it, too wrapped up in the soft prickling of velvet beneath her fingertips as she turned the box over and over again. Only when the heavy doors clicked closed once again did she allow herself to lift the lid, her breath catching in her throat with her brother’s final gift. The ring she had selected and purchased herself for the charade was slowly twisted off and moved to her right hand, making room for Greed’s showy choice of diamonds and rubies in platinum to take it’s place on the left. Without a word to Nybras, she slid away in a curl of Hellfire, reappearing in her home with her sister’s name trilling off her lips in preparation for the two of them to hit the town once again.
