Who: Bret Murray and Harvey Milk
What: Bret just found out who Harvey is, this is the conversation that follows.
When: Tuesday morning.
Where: The LGBTQ center in Manhattan.
Warning: Some brief references to sexuality.
So his boyfriend was a god and that was equal parts awesome and terrifying. Maybe the thought hadn't completely sunk in yet that there were other gods - and apparently a lot of them if Tommy's charts were anything to go by - wandering around the country. At any point in time he could have run into one of them and not known it. Luckily for Bret, he was always a well-spoken and polite person, so he knew he didn't have to worry about accidentally pissing someone off by being rude. He wasn't so much nervous by what he had done as he was nervous about what he was going to encounter.
While he would save the call to his mother - he still wasn't sure what he was even going to say to her; "Hey, why didn't you tell me you were trying to pimp me out to Harvey Milk?" - for later in the afternoon, he did have one stop to make that morning to generally just be smug and gloat. Then he and Paul had a few things to chat about. He wasn't upset that it had been kept from him, he understood the reasoning why, but that didn't mean that he couldn't put a few people on the spot about it for his own fun and amusement.
Bret wandered into the center on Tuesday morning, whistling something from The Producers softly and smiling at the girl at the front desk as he walked by. "Harvey in?" he asked, and she nodded and directed him to the older man's office.
Wiping the grin off his face, he replaced it with a casual smile and slid his hands into his pockets, wandering down the hall... The door to Harvey's office was open well enough to see in and Bret slowed his step a little, acting like he was on his way to the office he and Paul shared. "Morning, Mr. Milk," he said as he passed by.
"Morning, Bret," Harvey replied automatically. The pause that followed was brief before... "Bret?"
Having only passed a few steps beyond the door, he was still lingering there in the hall with a smug expression on his face. Bret turned on his heel and peered around the edge of the doorway. "Yes, Harvey?"
"Come here."
Looking nonchalant, Bret sauntered into the office and nudged the door closed behind him with his elbow. "What's up?"
Harvey didn't look terribly amused. "Tommy told you?"
"Told me what?"
"Bret."
He chuckled and ducked his head, shuffling his feet slightly. "Yeah, okay... Tommy told me. But he didn't have a choice, really - he accidentally cut himself in my kitchen helping me with dinner," Bret explained, leaning against the door. "And my first reaction wasn't oh my god, your finger just magically healed itself, it was oh my god, there's blood all over my counter where are the latex gloves - so thanks for instilling that paranoia in me, Harv."
Harvey leaned back in his chair and glanced at the young man. "More people should be as paranoid as you," he replied with a leveled glance.
"Are you mad?" he asked softly, taking a few steps towards the desk and shrugging one shoulder slightly.
Sighing, Harvey shook his head. He hated that Paul had taught Bret to do that - all it took was a look and the right tone of voice and Harvey was completely helpless. It was a dirty trick and he should be mad about that, but he just couldn't get himself there. "No, I'm not mad - at either you or Tommy. You would have found out eventually. Paul wasn't going to let you go much longer without telling you himself, but I told him that was Tommy's secret to reveal, not ours."
"You could have told me when you told my mother."
Harvey's eyebrow quirked. "How did you-"
"How couldn't she? She always talked about what it was like working for you and how your smile was something she could never forget. I'm sure she knew the first time she saw you again."
"She did," he nodded.
"And that's why I suspect her motives when she was so insistent I come work for you."
"Oh?" he feigned innocence.
Bret leaned his hands on top of the desk and slowly bent over it to look at Harvey. "She said I would adore you, that I just had to meet you. I suspect that she meant I would be just your type and I wouldn't be able to stop falling all over myself around you."
"You've done an admirable job," he replied with a faint smirk, leaning forward a little and canting his head at Bret. "So I take it your mother's plan backfired horribly."
Shrugging, "I wouldn't say horribly, but it didn't work quite the way she wanted it to. I'm still working for you, aren't I? And I'm still completely dedicated to your work and your legacy. I'm still going without sleep to be here pouring over paperwork and plans with you. I do adore you. I've grown up idolizing your every step - how could I not? And standing here with you now... is unbelievable." He tilted his head and smirked a little, looking smug again. "But... that doesn't mean I'm going to crawl under your desk and blow you, Harv."
Harvey snorted, "That's good to know, Bret."
"Thought I'd deliver that memo in person," he said, acting very matter-of-fact.
"Well, it is always best to deliver those kinds of things orally."
Biting back a grin, Bret turned his head to the side and drew his bottom lip between his teeth. "Nice..." he chuckled.
"So you and Tommy are still okay, then?" Harvey finally asked.
Bret smiled and nodded, standing up straight again. "Yeah. We're more than okay, actually. I mean... I never thought I could be this in love with someone. And maybe it's something special about him, but I just..." he took a deep breath and sighed. "Yeah, it's about like that."
"I understand perfectly what you're saying," he replied, smiling back at Bret. "If there's anything you ever need to ask..."
"I know," he nodded. "Nothing's changed - I just know you have a few more years of life experience to pull from, old man. I'm sure I'll have questions. But now, I need to go hassle your boyfriend. Apparently I'm going shopping with him before he has to go to class."
Bret couldn't help but grin at Harvey as he turned to leave the room. He wondered if people back on Castro felt this way just standing in the same room as Harvey - if he had this sort of presence then or if it was something newly acquired with immortality. Either way, there were some events in the works - events that Harvey clearly didn't know about yet - that were made all the more interesting by these new revelations. And his relationship with Harvey didn't change any. Bret had still never had a father figure in his life until he met Harvey and, in some weird way, he thought a lot of people probably felt that way. Okay sure, that made things a little weird sometimes, but at the same time it was nice to have someone you could trust that much.
