Who: Artemis and Hermes
What: Just a sibling chat
Where: Artemis' apartment
When: Saturday morning
Taking a deep inhale of her morning tea, Artemis smiled at the peace of it all. Her cats were curled up together on her couch, one white and the other black, looking almost like a perfect yin and yang. Outside, birds were singing for the coming of autumn. Inside she was warm and she had her tea, and then her apartment buzzer sounded and her peace was broken.
Leaving her tea behind, Artemis moved to the buzzer and she pressed the button to speak to whomever it was who had shattered her solitude. "Who is it?" she asked, a razor's edge to her voice letting her visitor know this better be good."
"Hey, Artemis! It's your brother!" Clearly the owner of the voice didn't care whether Artemis was annoyed or not.
Artemis, who instantly recognised the voice on the other side of her front door, sighed. It was her brother, sure, but not the brother she really cared to see. As the daughter of Zeus, she had a lot of siblings. Some she cared for, others she tolerated, and yet more she either didn't know, or didn't care for in the least. It Hermes at her door, and he was somewhere between a sibling she cared for and one she tolerated, depending on what he was doing at the time. At least it wasn't Dionysus. He came in handy at times, but he could be so very over the top at others. "Come on up," she said after a moment, and she buzzed him on through.
A few minutes later, Hermes stuck his head into Artemis' apartment where she was hastily finishing off her tea. She wouldn't let him take it away from her completely. "Hey there, Artemis. You missed a party last night. You should have come to Achilles' premier. I like your hair dark like that!"
Artemis looked up at him, her eyes narrowing at his compliment. Hermes did not often come without ulterior motives. "I would rather die that be seen at that cretin's premier. What do you want, Hermes?" It was always a good question with him. She pushed some of that dark hair behind her ears and waited.
"Straight to the point, hmm? Well I am about to head off to see our father who art in LA. I was wondering if you wanted to join me?"
Artemis, who had a good relationship with her father, or at least she had in the past, actually considered that for a moment. "I wouldn't mind seeing Zeus, but I don't think I want to do it in LA. Why would you want me with you anyway?" They didn't hate each other, but surely there was someone Hermes would rather have with him. Like his wife, Peitho, whom Artemis had very little respect for.
Hermes shrugged and he started pacing around her living room, picking up the random knick knack here and there, playing with it in his hands before moving on. "It's just been a while since I've seen you is all."
"And who's fault is that?" Artemis asked, her hands on her hips even if Hermes wasn't looking at her. It was his own fault he'd been arrested. "One hopes you learned your lesson."
"Lesson learned!" Hermes said, his hands in the air, complete with one of her figurines held in his right hand. "Don't get caught."
"You have got to be kidding me," she growled at him. She knew Hermes' preoccupation with deceit and trickery was hardly his fault as belief had shaped him and made him more interested in thievery than he had been in the past, but was he also unable to stop himself when he should know stealing could result in another incarceration.
"I might have a side trip to Las Vegas planned-"
"Las Vegas?! Hermes, do you realise I wouldn't set foot in that disgusting town if it were the last place on Earth?"
"Sure," Hermes agreed easily. "I didn't say I wanted you to come to Las Vegas with me. What I have planned there is my own business. I just thought it might be nice to have someone to go to LA with me, that's all. I was shut away from my family for a long time and I...I miss you. We were always a good team, you have to admit."
On the occasion when she had banded together with Hermes, they had worked well together, yes. It also meant that she knew him well, and she was aware trickery was one of his stronger points. "You are not dragging me into anything like this." The guilt trip never worked on her.
"What! I'm shocked! I'm not trying to drag you in at all! Come on, Artemis! For old times' sake?"
"You are ridiculous," she said with a sigh. 'Old times' hadn't always been fantastic anyway. They weren't without their spats. And on one occasion she had taken out her revenge on a woman he loved who had claimed to be more beautiful than she was. Hermes, however, had appeared to have forgiven her for that. As well he should have.
"Yeah," Hermes grinned back at her. "But you find it at least a little amusing, right?"
Artemis watched him for a moment and then she sighed and a small smile formed on her lips. "No," she said, refusing to let him win. "I don't find you amusing. And I am not coming to LA or Las Vegas with you. You can stay for a little while though, if you'd like."
"Dammit, Artemis!" Hermes sighed, but he replaced her figurine roughly where it belonged and then he collapsed onto her sofa, sending her poor cats fleeing for her bedroom. "You're going to make me go alone?"
"I am," she smirked at him and then she moved to sit beside him. "What do you think Zeus is going to say when he finds out you were in prison?" She grinned at the thought.
"Why do you look so gleeful about tha- Hey! Artemis! Stop it!" And Hermes tried to hit her with a pillow which she skillfully deflected, sending it right back into his face.
"Oof. Well played," Hermes admitted in the wake of Artemis' triumphant look. "Fine, I wanted to you come with me to distract some high-rolling gentlemen while we played a few games of cards."
"You had to know I'd say no," Artemis arched an eyebrow at him.
"Just like everyone else I have asked did. Apparently being arrested did not increase my cred..."
"Astonishing," Artemis quipped and she rose from the sofa to boil the kettle again. "Come on, Convict. I'll make you some breakfast and fill you in on the past two decades. How about that?"
Hermes smiled lightly and he rose to follow her. "I guess it'll have to do. But I'm going to remember this the next time you ask me for help."
"And I'm sure that will be a cold day in Hades," Artemis grinned at him.
