Elisabeth loved the park. It was possible to slip into Central Park and forget you were in a city. It was like visiting another world, which helped Elisabeth's feelings of claustrophobia. She had the entire United States to travel around, and it simply was not enough. Elisabeth missed Corfu and Geneva. She missed Bavaria and the whole of Hungary.
She did not miss Austria.
The park, even now that dinner-time had rolled around, was still full of the sounds of happiness and youth. Elisabeth craved these sounds. They were the sounds of freedom. Children ran and played and dogs barked. People enjoyed themselves. There were unfortunate things going on around her too, but Elisabeth paid them no mind. She buried her nose in a book written in Hungarian, and she listened instead of watched. The world around her moved on, and Elisabeth was sedentary. And for the moment, that was just fine with her.
