As evening falls over New York, there is a little corner of Manhattan that seems very busy, indeed. In the gardens at Hanover Square, there are several large tents set up, with brightly coloured lights strung up both in the trees and between the tents.
This is the setting for an event known as Hands Across the Water, organised primarily by New York's British community to show support and raise funds for those charity organisations helping the city rebuild after the recent blackout. And there are many events planned for the night to raise funds for such a purpose - auctions, raffles, even rumours of a karaoke contest.
The buffet table is laden with a whole variety of British foods - everything from the familiar, to the truly bizarre. Over to one side there is a dancefloor, where the band is currently tuning up - mostly traditional Celtic tunes, but with a few more popular numbers as well (and you won't believe how well they can make 'Love Me Do' sound with a fiddle and a tin whistle!)
The staff from the Consulate and the Council mill around, checking last minute microphone arrangements and table listings, as the Consul-General coughs and adjusts his bow tie for the final time.
Finally, everyone takes their places, and with a signal, the band starts playing as the first of the guests begin to arrive.
