Nemesis arrived later than most for the very good reason that she wasn't supposed to be there. She'd procured an invite, of course - the goddess of revenge was nothing if not connected - but the fact remained that her current alias was a police officer and a low-ranking police officer at that. Jess Taylor would never have been invited to a party like this. Still, Nemesis had decided to come anyway. For one thing, she felt like she needed to get out more. The last decade or so had been nothing but school and work, which was fine, but even a goddess needs a break.
She dressed up, feeling like she almost looked the part of the goddess so many human had respected (and feared). The dress itself was simple, but Nemesis had an air of confidence about her that made it seem elegant without being extravagant. The fact that the dress was white was her own little joke. White usually meant purity, which - it could well be argued - had nothing to do with her.
She pushed through the door to the ballroom and allowed her eyes to sweep once around the room. Then she moved into the room. She wasn't sure what the night would bring, but it would undoubtedly be amusing in some way.
