The walk from the subway station toward Urania's place of residence was a surreal experience. Never before had Mnemosyne felt so lightheaded, giddy, and worried all at one time. The mix of emotions was baffling, and nearly kept her lungs from working, her heart from beating. She couldn't count how the months on her fingers since she'd last seen her children, apart or together. What kind of a mother was she? Such thoughts had her shaking her head as she bounded up the front steps of her child's building. Queens had never been a particularly favorite part of New York City for her, but if Urania felt secure, little else mattered. She was a grown woman and could no doubt take care of herself, but even so, she was her little girl. Her darling, her star, the bright moon in her dark sky.
Urania. Urania, her Stella, how she longed to hold her daughter against her -- hold all of them. It pained her to see them in such a state, so full of agony and loss, and she had truly felt a few moments of helplessness at not being able to extend an embrace through her laptop screen. But this was how she could start helping her girls. By seeing them, holding them, reassuring them things would work out. That things would always work out.
She scanned the directory for the appropriate surname, and plugged in the digits, almost desperately now. The phone began to ring, a dull trill that echoed against the glass and inside the space of of her head.
Mnemosyne bit back a sigh, and waited.
