Things had not been going all that well for Echo.
Narcissus was pissed at her, the baby wasn't moving nearly as much as the books and doctors claimed he should be, her appetite had gone to shit to the point where anything she tried to eat tasted like ashes, she had lost weight, and without truly wanting to she had given up on living in general. She was getting pale, even with all the time she had been spending outside, and when not consumed by doing the bare minimum needed to keep her baby alive her thoughts were plagued by how she could most painlessly end the suffering Narcissus was putting her through.
The only real happiness Echo had anymore was during the brief points in time when the baby perked up enough to flutter around, and those moments only seemed to occur when she was outside enjoying nature. She missed being able to run as fast as she once could, her heavier shape slowing her down more than the simple dress she was wearing, but there was something reminiscent of home about frolicking down the mountain, through the trees, waving to hunters, and watching the woodland creatures drinking at the lake.
Leaving a note on the kitchen table for Himeros, Echo set out to test a theory she had been kicking around. It was dusk, and the mountain was usually free of most of the casual hunters by that time, so she made her way to the lake. Sitting on a rock, she considered what she was about to do as she slipped off her shoes. Dipping one toe into the water she held back a shiver, taking a deep breath as she walked out towards the middle of the lake. She waited until she was fully comfortable, body adjusting to the temperature as her dress grew heavy from soaking up some of the water. First, she leaned back to wet her hair, giving it another minute as she looked around to make sure she was truly alone.
Not spotting anyone nearby, Echo took in a quick gasp of air and then abruptly dropped beneath the surface. How long could she hold herself down there before getting scared and stopping this half-hearted attempt in it's tracks, she wondered.
