"Oh, how exciting for you," Uma said. "Set up doesn't take too much effort - sometimes it just means being around for a second opinion on things, or doing extra cleaning, stuff like that."
Kali's expression as she watched Echo was one of pensive curiosity, although the emotions themselves did not surface in the nuances of the way her eyes might have narrowed upon hearing certain things, the tilt of her head, or the slight smirk on her lips. The dark goddess could feel new life stirring within Echo, and it was there that Kali's interest was directed. Her speech limitations and outward emotions were of less interest to Kali than what lay beneath the surface. Echo, of Greek mythos and dusty books, sitting in Shanti and potentially working for Kali. It was almost amusing. She let herself show the amusement in another smile; the white-white of her teeth stark against her dark skin and in the darkening light surrounding them.
"Shouldn't be a problem, Echo. What in your work experience," she raised an eyebrow, tapping her fingers on the table next to the paper. "do you think would lend itself to Shanti?" The question was double edged - both a standard question in interviews but a tool with which to dig into Echo's past without her having to imply her role in the stories from whence she came.
With Uma present toying with Echo's beliefs about herself and her nature, the kind of nature instilled into the nymph by literary tradition and outside sources, would become difficult. While the girl had a vague idea of who Kali was, actually a pretty good idea, she had little knowledge that other gods, goddesses and mythological delights were also around. Uma assumed that if Kala was indeed who she thought she was - Maa Kali - then it was because of the growing interest in Hinduism and the devout relevance of the goddess to those who worshiped her. Didn't make it any less confusing for Uma, but at least it was some explanation.
