"Ate doesn't have a permanent address. Mona's working on finding one or finding her so that we can serve her with the divorce papers. She's gotta sign everything before it can go through-- you know how all this legal stuff works. It can take awhile, but Mona being who she is, she'll probably be able to push it through faster once Ate signs. I should be hearing from her soon." Wherever his ex-wife was, Mark was starting to wonder if she wasn't behind the gifts he was receiving. Credit card fraud was sophisticated, but there was no saying she didn't have any help.
"I was going to tell you, Glibt. I was waiting for the papers to be signed. I didn't want to worry you, so I just wanted to have everything taken care of before you knew." Even as he explained himself, guilt from Glibt's words overtook him. His boyfriend was angry, as he had every right to be. Mark knew he'd lied, and Glibt was right-- he had been sleeping with a married man, even if Mark didn't hold enough stock in the marriage to think of it that way. He didn't. As far as he was concerned he'd not been attached to Ate since the turn of the century. "I wanted you to know, I just needed it to be on my terms. I'm sorry." It wasn't the first time he would be saying those words tonight.
"I can imagine how... stupid it sounds to you that I forgot," he admitted softly. "With your fight and your people, I know I sound like a jackass. But that's what happened, and now I don't want anything to do with her."
