And suddenly the world is all brand new.
Who: Corvina ([info]blood_bred) and Thor ([info]wheresmyhammer)
What: Thor visits Carnival's carnival at Corvina's invitation.
Where: Midway Plaisance, currently in California.
When: Couple of weeks after this.
Warnings: None.

It had taken Thor longer than expected to make his way to California to go see the carnival the mortal woman spoke of. Mostly because he only had $5.73 to his name and a plane ticket to anywhere in California costed at least a hundred times the money he had. And even though he could always hotwire a rich man's car and drive off with it, he still needed more than $5.73 to pay for the gas to make it to the west coast.

It wasn't easy to find a job in the current day and age - in fact, that was how he lost his previous job - but doing mostly bodyguard and bouncer work here and there for a couple of weeks, he managed to scrape up enough cash to make his way to California.

And what a grand place it was. Not as bitterly cold as where he had been before, food was cheaper and people sounded different; seemed nicer.

When he set foot onto the fairgrounds, a strange sense of familiarity washed over him.

He couldn't quite put his finger on it though. The last time he had anything serious to do with a carnival was seventy or eighty years ago, working under a man who could only be described as eccentric at the time (though, to his credit, he knew about the existence of gods and wasn't too fazed by it) - and that, in mortal terms, was a long time.

Well, wouldn't do to stand around and wait until the woman appeared.

"Oi! You wouldn't happen to know a Corvina girl, wouldya?"

Her trailer was in sight when, of all people, Maarten stopped her. She had no idea what he made of her, and though she had barely heard more than a dozen words aimed her way from him since she’d joined the carnival again, she’d been on the receiving end of a couple of magic tricks he seemed to do out of boredom, so expected something like that when he walked up to her. Instead, he made a small gesture in the direction he’d come from, and barely seemed to glance at her as he spoke.

“Someone is looking for you. I have no idea who he is. I only told him I’d let you know.”

Corvina took a quick look around Maarten’s somewhat imposing frame. “Is it that guy right there with the-”

“Yes. Him.” With that, the magician seemed to feel he’d done all that was required of him and began to walk away.

“Thanks, Maarten.” All Corvina got in reply was a half-hearted wave. She looked down at her outfit for a brief moment before mentally shrugging and heading toward the person Maarten had indicated. She had no idea who might be looking for her, but whoever they were, they’d have to meet her while she was in her working clothes. It was a little more sparkly than she liked, but was getting used to it. She supposed around here, she didn’t look out of place, anyway.

The closer she got, the more carefully Corvina studied the man. He felt different. He felt like her father and like Carnival and Ares and Zelus and all the others like them that she’d met, though of course, in his own way.

“Excuse me. I believe you’re looking for me.”

He was no closer to placing why this place felt so familiar - he couldn't conceive of the same carnival running since the 30s; it was absurd - when he saw her approaching.

His gaze roamed down from the top of her head to her shiny shoes and back up again to meet her eyes.

"You don't look like goddess of mortals material, luv."

In fact she looked... well. Like any other mortal. Small, confused, knowing nothing of the world...

Not that it was a bad thing. So many gods would willingly trade their places with their bright-eyed bushy-tailed mortals any day.

"The goddess of mortals would at least be... more valkyrie-looking, I would think. The wings add a certain 'wow' factor."

Goddess of mortals? That sounded familiar. Hadn’t she been talking to someone and mentioned that maybe she was…..it only took her a moment to remember, as Corvina had had few conversations with anyone outside the carnival lately.

“Ha, I don’t think so. Goddess of mortals would look mortal. She would perfectly embody a mortal woman, wouldn’t she?” Corvina smiled a little. She hadn’t expected this. Who would really expect Thor to take them up on an invitation? If they were just a mortal, like she was, and if he was really Thor, that was. Still, he felt like a god, so he was, at least, not just some crazy mortal. Corvina wasn’t sure she should take that as a good sign, but refused to give the matter any more consideration than that.

“I’m sure I could find some wings if I really wanted them. I don’t think they’d be practical, though. Also…..welcome to the carnival.”

"Hmm..." He tapped his index finger against his lip as if he were seriously considering it - and perhaps he was. He wouldn't know; he wasn't aware of a god or goddess of mortals - it would be impractical, for one, to have all the other gods and goddesses around.

Oh. Wasn't the Christian god a god of mortals? The immortals floating around from the Christian mythology and certainly the Christian followers proclaimed things in the name of 'god' all the time and say he can do all sorts of things.

That might have been true, but Thor had never seen their god, so he couldn't say for certain what a god or goddess of mortals would look like.

Besides, all the gods could do all sorts of things. They all came back from the dead, Loki and the Greeks could shapeshift; Thor himself could change the weather in the blink of an eye and toss people around like rag dolls.

"Flying's pretty useful," Thor noted, if only to a certain extent. No amount of flying could take them out of this country.

"What do you do here?"

“Maybe. There are other ways to get around, and apart from flying, what good would they be? I think they’d just be in the way. You can never go far enough away to get away from…..everything, so….I can make do with my own two feet.” Corvina brushed her hair away from her face and straightened up a touch. There were certain things she was never going to be able to leave behind, only face as well as she could every day. Wings wouldn’t be of much help.

“I give the knife-thrower something to aim at. It’s not a bad job, and a good show, from what I hear people say afterward. You should stay long enough to see it - to see everything.” Maybe not the puppet show, she was tempted to add, but did not. Her father would hunt down another god on the grounds, it didn’t much matter if they watched her puppets or not.

“You know, we did introduce ourselves already, sort of….but…do you want me to call you Thor?”

"Well there's nothing for me to return to," Thor said offhandedly, even though his current situation should worry him more than he looked.

"Might as well stay a little while." And for them, 'a little while' could mean anything from a few hours to a few decades.

"I hope he's a good knife-thrower. Won't be mortal for much longer if there's a dagger in your forehead."

'And that'll be a real shame', he left unsaid. It was as unnecessary as it was... a little mean-spirited, perhaps.

"Thor's fine luv. I can't even remember my current name."

There was no knowing what he meant by nothing to return to. No home? No family? Corvina had questions she could ask, but asking them while standing in the middle of the grounds moments after meeting seemed a little too rude, even given the unusual circumstances of who he was and…well, her whole life, really. She was more comfortable around people like this than she should be.

“He is a good one. I wouldn’t stand up there and let him throw things at me if he weren’t.” Corvina tilted her head a little. Studying him thoughtfully. If he was going to stay, and enjoy the carnival, he may as well start his stay off in a good way.

“Alright. Thor. Now that you’re actually here, and at my suggestion, would you like to take a look around? Get something to eat?”

"Alright." He hadn't come to California with any plans - or anything more than a plane ticket and a duffel bag, for that matter - it wasn't as if he had anywhere to go or anything pressing to do.

"Take me wherever you'd like. Just so long as I don't get knives thrown at my head." Would hate for an accident to happen - mortals had a tendency to...

Well. To die. Quite easily, if he could add.

“I think I can manage that.”

As they walked, Corvina realized she hadn’t yet changed. She almost stopped and turned back to head towards her trailer for a quick change before she realized she could do a little better than that.

“Do you like carnival food? Hot dogs and popcorn and cotton candy and all that junk? If so, I think I’d like to get some and then go and change real fast while you eat. I’ll feel a lot better showing you around if I’m not covered in sequins and wearing these shoes.” As she spoke, Corvina began to angle towards a stall selling some of the aforementioned foods. She was sort of hungry, too, so it wouldn’t hurt to grab a little something for herself while they were at it.

Thor hadn't really thought of her clothes as a significant issue - at least until now, when he gave her a once-over while she talked. It was... shiny. Well, that's what those discs were meant to be, right?

"I'm not picky." Actually, that was a lie; there were a number of things Thor wouldn't put into his mouth, but fairground foods cleared the list quite easily. Asian restaurants - that was a different matter altogether.

He wasn't that picky about her attire either, but whatever worked best for her was fine with him too. Women and shoes - Thor had learned early on not to venture into that deep, dark, daunting recess in a woman's mind.

"It's been a long time since I've had 'carnival food'."

Corvina smiled. “Definitely time to change that.”

It didn’t take her long to get a couple of little fold-out boxes of food. Starting out with hot dogs and fries seemed like a good idea, though she gave the hot popcorn a look of longing. She got Thor a soft drink and handed over one of the boxes to him before starting in the direction of her trailer. Corvina thought that what she was doing might not be the smartest thing, but a god was a god and he’d do what he wanted - if she could make him somewhat happy with some food and a few quiet minutes to eat it in, then hopefully that would work out just fine.

There was a table and bench set up fairly close to her trailer. Corvina set the second box down on it and looked at Thor. “I’ll just be a few minutes.”

"Okay luv. Take your time."

He sat down on the bench with a slow, contented sigh, and sat his food and drink down beside him. Running his hand over the rough surface of the bench absently, he stuck his legs out and let his gaze wander.

It must have been... at least half a century ago. More than that. Maybe eighty years or something. A carnival. Back then things were different. He was different. He had been around for over 1,200 years and watched the world change around him, and yet life was still... too short, he supposed.

It didn’t take long to shed the trappings of her place in the carnival. Shoes slipped out of inside the door, costume quickly shimmied out of and makeup wiped away with a few passes of a facecloth. It felt good to slip into comfortable clothes and know that she was going to walk out again just to see the sights and enjoy them. She hadn’t done that since Stan had convinced her to visit the carnival again for the first time since she was a little girl, and while it hadn’t been all that long ago, it may as well have been. Trying to be useful, trying to figure out her father and trying to figure out herself had made the past few months feel like a whole year.

Leaving behind her glittery clothes and her dark thoughts, Corvina shut the trailer door and stepped lightly down the steps, making her way back to the table. She sat with a satisfied sigh and pulled her food towards her, looking forward to eating. Before she started, however, she was still curious.

“You said it was a long time since you had carnival food, so I’m guessing you’ve been to other carnivals. Anything in particular you liked about them?”

"Not really, no," he replied after glancing around a little. He didn't mean it as a slight - he was just being honest. A godless world was a lonely place to be, and nothing he could ever find in this foreign land would be nearly half as good as home. The language was different, the people were different - the world was different.

"I've worked in one before. I just needed the money. Beyond that, well... what you see is what you get."

“You did?” Corvina couldn’t help the surprise in her voice. What a god to find and invite to the carnival - one who’d worked at one before. She finished another mouthful of food while studying him again. Thor - what would he do at a carnival? He was supposed to be good with a hammer, wasn’t he?

“So…if there was nothing you really liked more than anything else, and you just worked in one, why come back? I did because….I think this is the only place I really might fit.” Which is a troublesome thought, she did not add out loud.

"Oh. Well it's nothing philosophical like that. You asked me to come pay you a visit, so I came." He wasn't stupid but he didn't need five million valid reasons or one of those ridiculous twelve-step action plans before deciding he'd do something. He was a god - he could do anything on a whim and not worry about it as much as others might, and he often did.

"Besides, at least you have a place you think you might fit. I had a place I fitted but I can't go back there anymore." Aimless wandering for hundreds of years - that probably wasn't the idea of immortality and how 'wonderful' it must be that everyone seemed to think about.

Corvina finished the last bite of her hot dog and pushed the box aside.

She had invited him, so he came. Not for the first time, Corvina had to wonder if she was entirely too comfortable with gods. Most people had a difficult time believing in just one. She knew several personally.

“I do know that going back to where you came from isn’t possible. I can’t imagine…..well, very much of what your life is like, I guess. Even if I don’t really belong here, it doesn’t matter much.” Standing, Corvina smiled at him and decided to change the subject before she ended up talking about death with yet another god.

“As you said, I did invite you here, so let me show you around.”
