Karl replayed the response in his mind again, slowly assessing it, looking for the "yes" and "no" and finding neither that could help him further. His eyes searched hers instead, trying to look for what he had saw during the mission, the one that had driven him to say something about it.
"Yes, we can," he finally responded, shaking his head as he braced a hand on the wall. His eyes never left hers as the distance grew shorter between them, the loud roar of the crowd signalizing the last minute towards the New Year falling deaf to his ears.
"Because I wouldn't want to work with anyone but you. I wouldn't trust them like I trust you and I can't care enough for them like I care about you."
His gaze flickered towards her lips before looking up again, his eyes darkening. "You don't have to agree. I just needed you to know."
