Unknowingly to his partner, Karl had picked up the language during his time on the Korean peninsula and understood the conversation rather well. The culture itself, however, wasn't understood to that certain degree but Karl figured that any mother in any culture would probably be a bit inquisitive about a stranger suddenly appearing in their midst like this.
