Who: Jess and Absinthe
What: a chase
When: New Year's Eve
Where: La Fée Verte

New York was always too loud on New Year's, and she hated it. Hated the noise, the cacophony of drunkenness and meaningless festivities- bah. It was just another year. Just another year of her life slipping away, down the gullet of Diana Monroe.

It wasn't even that Jess hated her boss that much- she did, of course, as much as any abused but very highly-paid assistant would, but no. She had been in chaos since that first meeting, that one night with Absinthe where the fey goddess blew open her mind and let the world in. Drinking alcohol gave her hideous headaches now, even smoking made her sick, and every word from Ms Monroe's tacky-lipstick-painted mouth set her teeth on edge and gave her the urge to scream until her voice gave out.

She had sworn to stay away from Absinthe, had tried so hard to get herself back again. There was that one night a few days ago, that Jess had a moment of weakness and took a sip; to say it felt good would be an understatement. But she swore again to stay away, to keep herself away from gods and their fucked-up weirdness.

But her boss had been meaner than usual, and Jess was so alone when Absinthe reached out to her. It was hardly difficult to step out of the club, to run and skip and jump the the distance to La Fée Verte until she stood there, her cheeks pink from cold and breathing hard, staring inside the cafe.

With a deep breath, she pushed the door open and stepped inside.

Alicia had plans for New Years eve that didn't include tending the shop and the cafe, but Absinthe had left La Fée Verte open. So Alicia worked. With Ken in California, Alicia didn't mind. A quick call later would help the girl feel less lonely.

As the cafe was attached to the shop, and you had to go into the shop to get into the cafe, Alicia always knew when people came in. It helped weed out the curious from the knowledgeable. The regulars where always directed to the cafe, the curious bought bottles to try at home.

Alicia sighed as she recognized Jessica and glanced down to her computer. Alicia knew why Jessica was here. Alicia also knew better then anyone what Absinthe was capable of.

With a sigh the girl rose and smiled at Jessica, moving to the door that gave way into the cafe. She led Jessica into the cafe and to one of the couches. She poured a glass of Absinthe, setting a spoon over it, and a piece of sugar. Absinthe was not present, at least not physically not yet, in the cafe. Alicia poured the water into the glass and rose, looking to the other girl, extending her hand. "Cellphone, please."

Jess handed her phone over obediently, pausing to take a first sip- god, how wonderful- before turning back to the girl. "Will she be here, do you think?"

Of course expecting the goddess to be anywhere was ridiculous- the chase, they always said, was the whole point. But Jess wanted rather desperately to see her, before she lost what was left of her nerve.

Looking back up at Alicia, Jess winced at her last memory of her and said, "I'm, uh, sorry about hitting you. Before. I was sort of- yeah."

Alicia took the phone with a smile, setting it in her pocket. Alicia dealt with one irate goddess enough. Two would not be healthy for her. The question made her smile. "She's here." While Alicia could understand the worry, not even she got to demand to see Absinthe.

"She'll be around." At the apology, she shrugged. "I've had worse. Don't worry about it. I'll be in the shop if you need me."

"Thanks, Alicia," Jess said absently, taking another deep drink of her absinthe.

She sat there for who knew how long, sipping slowly, helping herself to another when she was finished. As the cold water poured slowly through the sugar, Jess was hit rather wonderfully by the effects of her drink (she had always been a complete light-weight). Glass in hand, she wandered off, relaxing finally to the slight madness that had been ebbing and flowing on the outskirts of her mind since her first meeting with Absinthe.

Up, up the stairs she went, always looking for the golden-haired goddess. Jess made her way deeper into the apartment, into rooms she didn't recognize and places the average customer definitely was not supposed to be, until she found the fleeting fairy, beautiful as she remembered.

"Absinthe," Jess called, thinking back to high-school French, "Je suis ici."

Absinthe, for her part, was lounging on her bed. She'd make her rounds soon enough and check in on her patrons. Let them catch just the smallest of hints before she'd move on. Often, she found joy in sitting right besides those who chased her. It was a game, and one she enjoyed.

When Jessica called she frowned and sat up. "You should not be here petite." With a smile she rose and moved to the girl, fingers treading along the girls cheek and along her hair. "I opened the door for you, now you must run. Find your inspiration, your creativity." She smiled and kissed the girl before she drew back.

"Chase cheri."
