He ducked his head and smiled. That sounded like Jane indeed. It might have been centuries of a day-to-day existence, and the disjointed family picked up new members along the way, but it was comforting to know that some things didn't and weren't likely to change.
"I thought you knew me well enough to not have to ask that anymore, Alex," he said.
"I came by myself." As usual. Yet another thing that probably wasn't likely to change in a long time.
"How likely is it that there's someone out there who can put up with me, anyway?"
