WHO: Briseis and her NPC boyfriend
WHERE: Upper West Side, Manhattan, Friday morning
WHAT: Apartment shopping FTW!
"David, it's gorgeous!" Briseis was smiling out the bedroom window of the apartment she and her boyfriend were looking at, and although David had suggested they take it all slowly while looking for an apartment in Manhattan, Briseis was completely decided. The fact that they had been sleeping on a sofa bed at a friend's house in New Jersey since leaving David's home in Montana may have had a small part to play in Briseis' desire to get their own apartment as soon as possible.
And this one... oh, it was so completely perfect. It was the most beautiful of all the places they'd look at and it was filled with so much light, even now on this winter morning. Already Briseis was making plans for how she wanted it to look once they moved in. Sure, it was a little more than they had been hoping to pay each month but she had money saved to put towards it. Besides, it was perfect. How could she possibly let it go? She refused to put a price on her own happiness.
Even though she had lived in America since the 1940's, Briseis had never lived in the state of New York and never even visited before this century. As an immortal she had traveled the country, eternally an attractive and friendly (although sometimes outspoken) young woman, living here and there, and taking the jobs that interested or challenged her. (Briseis always enjoyed a challenge.) She never made her home anywhere larger than the smaller cities, finding that the more people she had around her, the lonelier she felt. There was an invisibility among the masses that frightened and upset Briseis. She liked the community that could grow when people knew each other by name. She considered herself something of a small town girl these days, and yet here she was, apartment hunting in the densest city in all of the United States.
She heard the footsteps behind her and turned to David with a bright smile. He was the reason she was here in this place she never would have come otherwise. His job was here and Briseis had followed him, knowing she would be happier with him than without. David looked at her adoringly, reaching out to wrap his arms around her. "You really love it, don't you, Bri?"
"I do," Briseis told him, stretching up onto her toes so she could kiss him gently. David let out a sigh - the over dramatic sigh he had perfected to tell her that she drove him mad and what was he going to do with her? The over dramatic sigh she knew was all in jest. Then he winked at her and grinned, turning to face the agent without letting Briseis go. "Looks like we're taking this one," he said with a grin and Briseis made a bright squeal of utter delight, bouncing up and down in his arms. "The beautiful one has spoken."
"Thank you, thank you so much!" She kissed him again. "Oh, we're going to be so happy here. I can feel it."
David ran a hand gently through her hair. "Then I know we will be."
It would take time to draw up all the paperwork and they needed to have all of their things moved from storage, but still it was their apartment now. They celebrated with a bottle of champagne while they sat on the floor of the living room and planned together - lazily and happily - what this new house (and life) would be like.
