Each footstep she took was light and graceful as she moved around her apartment. The Charis hummed under her breath, reciting a poem that she had heard recently in a soft voice.
"I'm nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there ’s a pair of us—don’t tell!
They ’d banish us, you know."
Willow trailed off with a light-hearted giggle, rearranging some vibrant flowers in a vase. Running her delicate fingers over the soft petals, she tilted her head and observed the finer details of each bloom. Flowers reminded her so much of home. They offered her pleasure in a world that seemed to be...so full and yet so lonely at the same time.
It didn't make any sense. How could there be billions of people around her and yet she could not bump into one that reminded her of what she had once had? Willow didn't think it was too much to ask for some company...
Or a chance to be heard for herself instead of what she had been to others...
She had been a sister, a wife and, finally, a mother.
But...
But she could be more! She could live off of her name alone! She was one of Zeus's many children, after all.
Nodding sharply, the Charis hurried from the room and sat in front of her easel. Dipping her brush into her paint, she began to fill in the empty spaces of her current project.
Maybe she would sell this one...
Smiling softly at the thought, she leaned forward and got to work. Before she was even fully aware of it, the sun set and her kitten gave a wide yawn and curled up on one of her feet. Setting down her paint brush, the Charis scooped up the warm, fuzzy ball and set him in her lap.
"Is it that time already?" she murmured, blue eyes filled with amusement, "I see, I see. It's time for you to sleep."
Rising with a slight flourish of her skirt, Willow carried the sleepy kitten to her bedroom and laid down on the bed with him. Stretching one arm over her head, the Charis let out a long, contented sigh.
America wasn't so bad after all.
