Who: Raijin and Wrath
When: Late Afternoon (~4 PM)
Where: An outdoor café
What: A moment of relaxation
Raijin took a long drag from his cigarette and watched the wispy tendrils of smoke lift into the air as he blew it out slowly. A simple human vice he had picked up long before Big Tobacco took root in this world - smoking had been an important part of ancient rituals. A way to connect with the spiritual and divine by inducing a hallucinogenic state. Interesting how it was now just a bad habit amongst mortals, one that Raijin indulged in freely. It wasn't like he could get cancer from the slender sticks, or that the nicotine even had any affect on him. He simply liked the calm that overtook his body with every deep breath that he inhaled. Raijin also enjoyed the smell of the smoke; it reminded him of the smell of burning incense and candles from the shrines that used to worship him. But those days were long gone now and he had to survive in a world that didn't believe in going to shrines to pray. The old Japanese god held the cigarette in between his forefinger and middle finger, glancing at it almost curiously as an interesting thought entered his head. If he produced a brand of cigarette, one that mortals could enjoy and smoked often, would that increase belief in him and thus his power? Millions of people in America smoked, and they all smoked different brands: Camel, Pall Mall, Marlboro, would he be able to squeeze in on such a lucrative market? Raijin pulled out his blackberry and jotted down some notes. It was an idea that was worth looking into.
His coffee had turned cold and stale, and he hailed the waitress to bring him another cup. Raijin put out his cigarette and opened up the newspaper to the business section, his blue-grey eyes glancing at the rising and falling stock market report. A smile twitched on his lips - Raijin Corp. stock was on the rise thanks to the recent video game and toy release two weeks ago. He continued reading - it was important to keep up with other companies, his rivals, in order to stay on top of the game. He couldn't afford to lose what power he did have; but if he did, he was sure he'd find another way to survive. Raijin had managed to do as much this entire time, and doing so in the future wouldn't be much of a problem. Folding the paper, he placed it on the table and lifted the cup of coffee to his mouth. The steaming, hot brew filled Raijin's senses as he took a careful sip. His eyes closed as he let it slide over his tongue and down his throat. He could feel its warmth spreading through his body and relaxing him further. It seemed to be the perfect way to end his work day, which just happened to be shorter than usual. Normally, Raijin could be found in his office long after the sun had set in the horizon. Oftentimes, he would work alone with nothing but the stars and moon to keep him company throughout the night.
But the Old God had decided that he would rest today. It had been quite some time since he had a chance to rest at all. He deserved it after all of the hard work he had accomplished. Raijin pulled out his blackberry and typed up a text message to his favorite New God for a meeting with her tomorrow. He slipped the sleek device back into his inner breast pocket and pulled out another cigarette. He brought the stick to his mouth and lit it with a quick flick of his lighter. Another puff of smoke rose from his table, and the god watched with interest at the mortals that passed him by. They didn't know they were walking by a God, but why would they when he looked like everyone else? They were oblivious to their surroundings, each of them busy with their lives as they talked on their cell phones, attending to business or making plans for later that evening. Raijin watched them all from behind dark sunglasses, and though he normally would have held an intimidating aura around him today the God was very open and casual. He was alone at his table, though the emptiness invited the company of another. Who would join him today? Not even the god knew that, but perhaps it would be somoene interesting enough to hold his attention for a short while.
