OK. Now things were starting to get weird. Dev wasn't sure if she was more offended at Sato's offer to pay, sympathetic to the woman who was obviously grasping at straws here, or just plain freaked out.
She took a deep breath. "OK, look. First of all, I'm just going to forget that you offered to buy Alex a friend. Friendships don't work like that. You don't become someone's friend for what you can get out of it - or at least I don't. So let's just -- make that clear right there." Her gaze dropped to take in the other woman's clearly more sophisticated and expensive outfit, and for a moment Dev felt very small.
"I'm willing to forget that because I can see that you're trying to help Alex," she bit her lip for a moment, and then forged ahead, "I'm even willing to believe you're sincere. But I'm not willing to go into this as like - your paid emissary or whatever. I'm not going to be supporting you or obeying you or anything like that - not until I can trust you."
Dev paused and held Hannah Sato's gaze, straightening her shoulders imperceptibly. "And until you tell me more about yourself, I don't think I can. But I'm already Alex's friend."
