In her list of 'Weird and Freaky Shit That Has Happened to Me This Year,' this encounter was starting to rate in the upper twenties, and that was saying something. Dev couldn't help but take another half step backwards as the woman began to apologize. She had the uncomfortable feeling that she was being sized up, and if this Hannah Sato had the ability to find her out of nothing --
This was too much, it was entirely too much, and recently Dev could only put encounters with immortals in that category. Then Alex's name was mentioned and pieces started to snap into place. This wasn't normal. Dev had a long way to go in figuring out what had made Alex naked in the middle of the day, wandering through church claiming that he had just been born in a closet, but she knew enough to know that he had to be kept safe until he could figure it out - and to pay attention when he mentioned he'd been picked up by a Ms. Sato.
All her suspicions when Alex had told her he'd changed where he was living resurfaced. Who was this woman who had taken him in? Did she know him from before? What were her intentions? Was Alex OK? Was the woman... mortal?
Dev was a horrible liar. She knew that. She really, really needed to work on it. But that didn't mean that she couldn't give it a level go. And what came next wasn't lying, exactly, as much as it was not telling everything that she knew. Her voice was cautious, almost hopeful, and her eyes were wide, and Dev prayed that she wasn't over-doing it. "You're Alex's godmother?"
